Australia has vowed to increase cooperation with Cambodia in a bid to build closer ties. The announcement came yesterday after Foreign Affairs Minister Prak Sokhonn and Australian Ambassador Angela Corcoran signed an agreement on establishing regular talks between senior officials from both countries.

Mr Sokhonn said the agreement was new a mechanism aimed at further enhancing cooperation, dialogue and consultation in the political, security, economic and cultural fields and to exchange views on subjects of common interest and concern for both countries. “Under this agreement, both foreign ministries agreed to convene meetings annually or whenever necessary at the level of undersecretary of state from the Cambodian side and first assistant secretary from the Australian side,” Mr Sokhonn said.

Ms Corcoran said Australia and Cambodia had a long standing relationship stretching back 65 years. “We enjoy a broad bilateral relationship with a shared commitment to make our region stronger, to bring our countries closer together and to create opportunities for all Cambodians and all Australians,” she said.

Cambodia is on a dangerous path towards the horrific years of the Khmer rouge domination led by a former KR commander. If closer ties with Australia, whatever that means, are true then it is only serving to assist Sen's obvious despotic desires of returning to the days of the 1970's.

We should be choosing our friends more wisely. People of Cambodia have been through enough. Hun Sen is mightily dictatorial now.

At a time when Sweden has just announced severe reservations with Cambodia may effect the aid it gives; the EU has expressed reservations, the US has expressed reservations and Hun Sen is arresting opponents and trying to dissolve the main opposition party prior to the upcoming election which many predict will be a tough one for him.

Hun Sen is like Madura. Not the slightest bit interested in democracy unless he wins.

Now Aussie go this way - you need a new government mate.

I think Australia has one thing in mind with Cambodia---and that is helping to solve their (Oz) refugee problem. Now that the new USA president does not think Obama's  deal of exchanging Muslims for Christians with Australia was such a wonderful deal. Oz has looked to other places where it can put them and close its interment camp down, because it is coming under a lot of international pressure over it.
