Where to find in Chiang Mai...(food)?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I've recently moved to Chiang Mai and I'm having troubles finding the next things: (preferably near the huay kaew road area)

A. Khanom Krok (Rice pudding delicious ball thingies)- A nice man was selling them in the Thai neighborhood I lived in in Bangkok, and I got addicted. However I don't seem to find them ANYWHERE in Chiang Mai..

B. Potato dishes- Being from a background that used to eat potatoes for breakfast, lunch and dinner I need them like the air I breath. I know it's not exactly the "local" food in Thailand, and I adore the Thai food, but sometimes I just need a nice side of mash or jacket potatoes...

Help a girl out:wai:

Thanks in advance!

My wife says there is a stall on the Hang Dong Road, on the lefthand side, past the Samoeng junction that sells really good Khanom Krok

mighr be a bit of a drive depending on where you live ;)

Huh! Always wanting to help out a girl, me being a "gentleman of the old school".

But with going by " nomanymore" is not a good idea. It resembles to much "no-man-anymore".
By changing your "handle" to "moremanthanever" (more-man-than-ever), I can assure you, that every "chef", capable to differentiate a Potato from a Cucumber will gladly assist you. Potato-wise. Most will also do the dishes for you afterwards.

Find a map, locate yourself. Best open-air market near you would be 'sirithana' market.  This nearly on the main road from Chang Puek Gate, on the moat. Same as Hiway 107.  From the gate  walk away from the moat for about 1 km, what 3 rd traffic light. The market is off to the left, 100 meters from the road.  All the food you need, and maybe want, can be found.

folks here really have little experience cooking potatoes since white rice is 'in their minds' so much better. French fries most common, yeah i like steamed spuds in rice cooker at home.

Also a lot of food stalls at the Chiang Mai gate Southern side of the Old City

Plus there are many stalls on the Northern side of the Moat

There are many food places on the east of the city on the road and the Sois of the main road

It also depends on where you lve

Maybe in your local area there is a Market to look at

Happy Food Hunting

Khanom Krok are sold everywhere. You just have to keep an eye out for them. When you find a seller whose snacks you like, you can ask them where they sell each day as the sellers tend to go to 3 or 4 different locations at various times of the day to sell (schools, hospitals, night markets, etc.). My wife liked the ones from a seller who used to sell M-F at the old main P.O. which was demolished and is now being rebuilt. When the wife is in Hang Dong, she buys them from that lady's sister....

You can buy potatoes at every market and every supermarket. Take them home and cook them.

Potatoes are 30-40 per kilo at Ton Payom Market.  Quality varies.  They actually come out good in the steamer, with some Heinz Ketchup.

Unfortunately don't have a kitchen where I live so...

Then you may be out of luck. I have never seen a baked potato vendor in C.M. I've seen them in Bangkok, but not here.

Buy a 2nd-hand microwave. There are dozens of them for sale on FB groups. You don't need a kitchen to cook a potato. You can wash them in the bathroom - assuming you have a bathroom.

EDIT:

Really should have mentioned I don't have a kitchen in the apartment...

It would of been so much easier to just go out buy some and make.

Instead I have to hop form one western-style cafe to another to try and find anything that has potatoes in it...

You just broke my heart. But yeah I guess if there's nobody selling them a Microwave may be the way to go.

lol "nomanymore" was actually derived from "not many more like me". but hey I never though about how it sounded...It's a nickname I've been using a lot after seeing it written somewhere.

And where could I find the said chef who can differentiate a potato from a cucumber? I've never heard of such a thing in these parts!:shock1:

Don't be heart-broken. You will sort it out. Seriously though, of anything you could cook - a baked potato has to be the easiest.

Asia? Tropics? Irish potatoes?  One of those fits poorly.  Suggest sweet potatoes already steamed, ready to eat. Found in market i mentioned above.  Maybe found in all markets.

^^^ South America, Peru, Bolivia tropical highlands, nothing Irish about potatoes...  I think Sizzler does baked taters...  microwave not so good, steamed and smashed with garlic and green onion or chives oh yeaaa. Suni's on Tha Pae Rd. soi 2 does good "home fries" styles well as great fries.  Local food, Gang masaman baby... and Gang gulee.

Microwave or Otto bowl oven ........ around 1,000bht.

Both do good baked potato, I prefer the microwave 'cos it's easy.

Stab potato with a fork 6x, put in the microwave for 6 minutes. Job done.

Khanom Khrok:  There is a well-known place along the river, North of the Riverside and Good View restaurants and before you get to the Nakorn Ping bridge:  https://goo.gl/oxAoBg   Or near markets I see it a lot, but can't really think of one now.

And then baked or mashed potatoes.. In town probably the cheapo Farang restaurants, places like Mad Dog, Gekko Garden, the Irish Pub and others.

I would especially recommend Gekko Garden, if you can get past the sadness of it all.

( LOL.. sorry I know that sounds weird but if you go then maybe you'll see what I mean. ;) )

Also a personal guilty pleasure is to visit Nick's restaurant in Hang Dong (the one with the play things for kids) and order the German Sausage thing with double mashed potatoes and double Sauerkraut and then mash it all up. But then that's close to where I live, I could probably arrange a similar Carb & Kraut orgy at other places.

EDIT:  I realize most of these places aren't in the Huay Kaew area.. chances are there will be options around Nimmanhaemin, but I know nothing about Nimman. (And try very hard to keep it that way.)

And YES!  One West of town, near the back (South) entrance of CMU: https://www.facebook.com/palangmor/

That's my wife's favorite place to buy them.

Sometimes Tops in the basement of Kad Suan Kaew mall has cooked Irish potatoes on offer, next to the salad bar by the side of the veggie weigh machine.  They always seem to have cooked sweet potatoes and pumpkin, but sometimes Irish potatoes, as well.

Dukes at Maya Mall will sells potatoes as a separate side dish.

As mentioned, it's very easy to cook potatoes in a microwave and I've found they do well in the steamer basket of a rice cooker.  When we first arrived, we didn't have a kitchen, either, and were washing dishes in the bathroom sink.  We lived in Viang Bua Mansion near Tanin Market (the alternate name for "Sirithana market") and I found it possible to cook a surprising number of things in the steamer basket of a rice cooker.

I realize it doesn't quite "fit" but it ain't about that. Growing up that's all I ate, and I'm starting to feel the withdrawal...

Woohoo seems like my Khanom krok problem is solved... followed up a lead from a Thai blog I google-translated yesterday all the way just to find out the stall is not there.

The first link seems legit, there's a post from sept. (this year, so that's something.) will go check it out tomorrow.

Unfortunately Nick's is a bit out of the way for someone who uses a bicycle as a method of transport.

Appreciate all the help!:wai:

Will check out Kad Suan Kaew mall, never been there to be honest.

Will have to do a price comparison between the microwave and a rice cooker...

Choose between microwave and rice cooker?  If top quality rice cooker i would choose it for steaming veg, poaching and hard boiling eggs, boiling noodles and pasta, even some oddball cooking like steamed nan bread.  The teflon coated cooking pot cleans up in a jiffy.

I do use but do not esp like the microwave cooker; far too noisy and burnt food common.
