Police forces failing to tackle modern slavery in UK, report shows

Jamie Grierson

Police forces are failing to tackle modern slavery and human trafficking because the cases are too difficult and senior officers believe the public lack sympathy for the victims, a highly critical report has found.

Victims are not always identified and investigations are closed prematurely, the report by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services said.

Failings in the approach left victims exposed and allowed perpetrators to continue to exploit the vulnerable, it added. In one case, the inspectorate was told: “The public view is, they are not our girls.”

All this waffle over the years about ID cards, probably the only people that don't have an ID card are non drivers.

The modern/plastic driving licence has a photo of the person on it.

In my opinion that's near enough an ID card without going to all the expence of making an official ID card.

The UK is morally bankrupt, its not a safe place to live.

The police forces must react to this criticism from their inspectorate and will be required to show what they are doing about it.

Legislation was introduced to force companies to include statements on modern day slavery and what actions they take to counter it, including throughout the levels within their supply chains. Again, the response has been pitiful. Now some big blue chip household name businesses are touting the issue. IME, that means lots of blah blah blah and bugger all action.

Some police forces in the UK are better than others. I have several experiences of two forces being inept, uninterested and unresponsive. And yet government does all it can to neuter any citizens' response and defense capabilities.

Nothing to do with any ID or not.....

It's just a matter of having the political courage to plainly deport overnight the bad guys and give a helping hand to the good guys who are integrated and strongly contribute to the UK economy...no matter what their skin colour or nationality......

and the best way would be issue a driving licence as a standard practice for the 18s and above, but then only validate it after the necessary exams tests etc have been achieved and make it a law to carry at all times

UK is a backward country, no ID system in place, so anyone can live there without disclosing if your supposed to be there or not.

Well done on exposing your lack of knowledge.

Non EEA immigrants will have either a visa in their passport or a biometric residence card showing their immigration status in the UK.

EEA migrants may also have a residence card, though not legally obliged to, and will certainly have their passport or national ID card proving their nationality and right to be in the UK (at least until Brexit)..

Yes, there are illegal immigrants in the UK, but the mere fact that they are illegal means they have to remain below the radar. For example, anyone who applies for any job in the UK has to prove their right to work in the UK. Either by showing that they are a British citizen or, if not, that their leave to remain in the UK allows them to work.

It is the employers responsibility to confirm this, and the penalties for not doing so are severe.

Quote

You can be sent to jail for 5 years and pay an unlimited fine if you’re found guilty of employing someone who you knew or had ‘reasonable cause to believe’ didn’t have the right to work in the UK

Of course, illegal immigrants, whether they have overstayed their leave or entered the UK illegally, are among the larger groups of those exploited by modern day slavers.

Difficult to deport the bad guys when they are British born and bred!

Such as the notorious Rooney family mentioned in the article in the OP.

Would you be refering to the british citizens who are originally from the ex-British settlements / colonys  around the world....

A 48 Year Old Woman was arrested at a Brothel for not having proper Immigration Papers?

Gosh! No small wonder now why you Brits come to Thailand for some decent action.

Hell! Paying Big Money for a 48 Year Old Woman at a Brothel is almost as bad as kissing you Wife's Grandmother at your wedding, and she slips you the tongue.

Well, from the name I guess that the Rooney family can trace their ancestry back to Ireland: which, if they can, then in their case, yes.

Agree 100%. Illegal entry deserves a plane ticket home.

Cheapest way in the long run.
