BANGKOK, 25th October 2017 (NNT) – Thailand’s Ministry of Defense has joined ASEAN counterparts meeting with partner nations in adopting a stance to combat terrorism, provide humanitarian aid and relief in cases of natural disaster.

Defense Ministry Spokesman Lt Gen Kongcheep Tantrawanich has reported on discussions held as part of the ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting Plus (ADMM Plus), which included representatives from the United States, Russia, New Zealand, Australia, China, Japan, South Korea and India.

He said talks focused on developments in ASEAN and its work with partners in seven areas, namely; anti-terrorism operations, humanitarian aid and disaster relief, maritime security, military medicine, peace keeping, cyber security and mine removal.

The meeting also saw an exchange of views on regional security issues, with the most prominent topics being the South China Sea, the East Sea, terrorism and the situation in Rakhine State of Myanmar.

It was decided that all sides should work together closely, and adhere to international practices to seek mutually beneficial solutions and to avoid conflict. They resolved to use diplomacy and direct communication to deal with major issues and to develop a new, more secure ASEAN region.
