Knife-wielding man robs gold shop in Chanthaburi

By The Nation

A knife-wielding man robbed a gold shop in Chanthaburi’s Muang district on Monday and made off with 14 necklaces worth Bt72,000.

The robbery took place at the Chai Li gold shop on Kwang Road at 11.37am.

Police said the man, who was wearing a motorcycle helmet that hid his face, walked into the shop and tried to smash a window display box with a long knife but failed to break it.

He then grabbed 14 necklaces, weighing 3.8 grams each, and hit Supaporn Wutthiket, the wife of the shopowner, three times with the knife, failing to inflict cuts but bruising the woman.

The man then ran out of the store and fled on a motorcycle.

Chanthaburi Police chief Pol Maj-General Jaral Jitjuajoon and forensics police officers were attempting to collect the robber’s fingerprints at the shop on Monday.

Jaral said the man might be the same suspect who robbed a Sonthaya gold shop in front of the main fresh market in Muang district two days ago.

A brave female gold shop owner fought back when a robber armed with a sword stole from her Chantaburi shop.

CCTV footage at the Chai Lee store in Muang district of the eastern Thai town showed sixty one year old Suphaporn Wuthiket try to stop the man in a full face helmet who ran into her store.

The thief, armed with a foot long sword, tried to smash his way into a cabinet as Suphaporn talked to a female customer.

He managed to get 14 pieces of gold worth 72,000 baht before plucky Suphaporn laid into him, reported Tnews.

He fled the store chased by Suphaporn's husband Wanchai who had been out back. She then retrieves a gun from its case in a drawer behind the counter and joins in the chase.

The thief - on a motorcycle that had been parked outside a movie theater - got away. No license plate was visible on camera.

The video showed forensics officers and other police investigating at the scene of the crime.

That's what you get if the police does nothing against motobikes without licenseplates.

The key word is nothing.  Shop owners would be better off employing private security to make sweeps of such things.  The RTP is not that good at police work.  It is more like a club.
