What price a handicapped child for life?

A poor mother in Khon Kaen has appealed for help after she says the authorities fobbed her off with an insufficient payment after an ambulance left her child handicapped for life.

"Nong Palm", now aged three, was severely injured when a Ban Mai based pick-up ambulance did an illegal U-turn and knocked Paweena Hasap's husband and child from a motorcycle.

The driver of the pick-up was given a suspended jail term and 3,000 baht fine.

But Pasap was left having to care with a handicapped person for life.

She said she needed five million baht but the system bargained her down - she got 900,000 baht.

But she said yesterday that her costs since the accident in 2015 have already well exceeded that.

She told Daily News that what she wants is everything to be alright with Nong Palm - but that is not possible. So it has to be about the money and she needs justice so that she can provide for her child.

Nong Palm needs daily care and hospital visits and costs are mounting up.

In tears she said that she has been to hell and with her low salary - she is a hospital worker too - and the fact her husband is a poor farmer they cannot cope.

"We have to fight this case," she said, "The family is fed up and I can't accept what we have been offered".

Kosolwat Inthijanyong of the public prosecutor's department is to look into her case with the local authorities to attempt to seek justice on her behalf after other avenues had been exhausted.

Fight hard lady. A lot of people just don't realise at the beginning of their journey how much long term care will cost.

My partner was beaten with severe head injury. We still visit the head doctor and take medication 10 years later at about 3000 a month.

But then as a result of being kicked his pancreas failed and now he has diabetes. Add to that another 3000 a month in needles and strips and medicine.

His lawyer negotiated 400,000.

We are well past that.

She should negotiate a monthly payment for life, she's going to need it.

That punishment, in itself, is a complete joke anyway, considering the damage that was caused.

If they can show that they spent all the money on medical fees , they then may have some grounds to make further claims .

If the money has been spent on other things , they have no grounds to make further claims

She had already agreed to and received 900 000 Baht in compensation

Liability has been accepted and an agreed compensation paid

Case closed .

Harsh but true which is probably why all avenues have already been exhausted
