I’m not setting up party to support junta at election: Maj-Gen Songklod

Maj Gen Songklod.

 

Maj-General Songklod Thipparat on Monday rejected speculation that he was setting up a political party to support the junta ahead of the coming national election, saying he had not yet registered the party with the Election Commission.

The senior military officer said he had been focused on “volunteering”, apparently referring to the new organisation he had set up to work on volunteering to boost what he called “Thai Nation’s Power” – the party that he had said back in June he was planning to set up.

 

He conceded that he was part of the National Council for Peace and Order, having been working for the council under its committee for reform preparations for Thai people’s happiness.

 

Songklod said that as he was still receiving complaints from people during his work on the ground, he had come up with the idea of his new work in order to carry out his intention to undertake volunteering.

 

“I don’t work for politics, I’m not good at it,” he said. “I have not yet done anything about the setting up of a political party as speculated. I have no idea about it at all. Maybe, people now know me a lot [following the reform committee’s work on the ground], so they link me up with politics.”

 

The major-general retired from the Defence Ministry as a staff judge advocate in 2016. 

 

He had worked as a chief of staff at the ministry’s permanent secretary office, and of the Internal Security Command Office.

Which is probably code for he is. Didn't the PM himself (when he was just a General) promise the very day before that there would be no coup?

He received complaints while working for the people's happiness, so he came up with new work which is volunteering.

But but you have started campaigning in your pink shirts in your province. Getting a head start in campaigning even when the ban is on. Generals are just good at lying; period. 

 

The pieces of the jigsaw are coming together. . . constantly delayed elections, a continuing ban on political activity by its rivals, and now this latest bit of double-speak from an NCPO brass-hat.

 

And this on top of the deputy PM's refusal to confirm or deny that the junta are planning to form their own party.

 

Well, they do say a wink is as good as nod.

As someone mentioned in a previous thread, i wonder who is funding the setting up of various offices around the country, gatherings of up to 2,000 people according to another paper (of course not political) etc.

 

He must have very deep pockets... or he has some backing.

I did not noticed it. Could you please remind me in which paper it was? Thanks.

It is indeed sad that every political hack,  spoksmen or whatever in  Thailand their title generally starts with Maj -Gen or General , couldn't be Khun or Mr , next time there's a student Uprising , no deals with the military just for them  to save face......................................................

Well yes, that would otherwise be a violation of NCPO intentions even though a law was endorsed to allow political party organization.

Well yes, that would be consistent with the endorsed law but because of NCPO intentions no one apparently outside the military is allowed to organize and boost party membership and political platform.

I suspect, sadly, that when that happens the junta will come out shooting - to "defend democracy".

Then there will be no deals. They have set the stakes too high, and the safety valve is gone.

It will be messy.
