Govt urged not to use people’s problems as excuse to stay in power

Pheu Thai Party secretary-general Phumtham Vejjachai on Tuesday urged the government not to use people’s problems as an excuse to prolong its stay in office, as the best guarantee for resolving their issues is the return of democracy so that their voices can be heard and reflected through participation-based policies.

 

To claim that the government needs to finish resolving one problem before moving on to another is equivalent to dragging its feet in returning democracy to the people, he suggested.

 

The government’s roadmap, as such, has become merely an excuse, which goes against its stated goal and extends its work period in office, he said, adding that this prevented politicians from taking up office.

 

Phumtham said the new political party law was already in effect and required parties to undertake several related activities.

 

This is a necessary condition for the work and provides the opening up of democratic space in which politicians can reach the people, he said.

 

The ruling junta has not yet lifted its ban on political gatherings and activities despite the fact that the new law has been in place since early October.

Funny how us people living here can see it, but the average Thai cannot - or is willingly ignoring it. The army has had a taste of power and money now and want to keep it, whether through making up some party or by force when next government cuts the army budget !

I have yet to see a government here to cut an army budget democrats and PTP never seen it happen. 

 

The average Thai just does not care about politics as long as it does not hurt them in any way. Block face book and we will have a revolution, let the junta stay on and most wont care. 

That is what happens when you let them in.  It is hard getting rid of them.  They are like most pests. 

Seems the voices of discontent are growing louder. I suppose now that a certain event has passed things may get a little more heated up? Would that be a fair assessment?

It’s definitely building momentum. I feel people are beginning to grow a pair. The longer this current government procrastinate the more we’ll see more outspoken people. The problem for the government now is they can’t use their dirty ‘attitude adjustment’ tricks anymore. Gives the appearance of being back at square one. 

 

Just hope the current government don’t resort to drastic measures. Power is an addictive substance. So is money.
