Chinese media upbeat on U.S. ties ahead of Trump visit

BEIJING (Reuters) - China and the United States have common interests but the relationship needs careful handling, Chinese state-run media said on Wednesday ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump's visit to Beijing.

North Korea and trade are expected to dominate Trump's trip, with the U.S. leader likely to push Chinese President Xi Jinping to do more to rein in Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programmes and address China's large trade surplus with the United States.

The ruling Communist Party's official People's Daily said in a commentary that as China becomes strong, it won't repeat "old fashioned zero-sum thinking" in handling ties, but will work with the United States to construct a cooperative and mutually profitable relationship with no conflict.

"In realising the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula, and protecting peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, China and the United States have common interests," it said.

"The two sides should respect one another's interests, maintain close communication and consultation, and make unremitting efforts to promote a thorough resolution of the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue."

Trump heads to China later on Wednesday after visiting Japan and South Korea in the first legs of his marathon Asian tour.

Trump's attempt to make a surprise visit to the heavily fortified border separating North Korea and South Korea was aborted on Wednesday after dense fog prevented his helicopter from landing at the doorstep of the North Korean nuclear standoff.

The China Daily, in an editorial which preceded the announcement of the abortive Trump trip to the border, said Trump not going to the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) and North Korea not recently carrying out any nuclear or missile tests was a "hopeful sign that both prefer to find a peaceful solution to their predicaments".

China has promised a "state visit plus" for Trump, and while having not released any details, Beijing is attaching great importance to the visit.

Trump is expected to go to the Forbidden City, possibly guided by Xi.

"Such hospitality is rarely seen in modern China," influential tabloid the Global Times, published by the People's Daily, said in its editorial.

"Beijing's enthusiasm reflects the most positive part of the attitude that the diversified world holds toward the U.S., and the realistic international outlook of the rising China."

Trump was elected to do two things. Enforce immigration laws and readjust trade with China. Now, if comes back and has caved into another immigration amnesty and backed down on China, he is going to be completely isolated. If all you can tell your voters is that your only legislative accomplishments are for the benefit of  illegal aliens and Chinese dictators, then your days are numbered.

Well, with any luck, he may be able to tell his voters that he will have secured huge tax breaks for billionaires.

Three UCLA basketball players are now in Chinese custody for shoplifting.  I wonder if I will be the only American urging them to give them hard labor.  Could get interesting.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/ucla-basketball-players-arrested-china-day-trump-visit-005857956--nba.html

The basketball players supposedly stole the stuff in a Louis Vuitton shop. If they did actually steal stuff, yes, they should be given serious prison time in China.

Turning up in China, and thinking that you can steal stuff. They are a disgrace to America, and should be further punished when they go home to America. Commit a crime, you get punished. Commit a crime where you damage your nation's image, the punishment has to be greater.

So you mean China should punish these players more than they would their own citizens because these basketball players have damaged the United States' image?

No.
I'm saying that China should punish these men, as if they were Chinese who were caught shoplifting.
And then, when these men go home to America, America should give them a further punishment. The further punishment being done by America is because, 'these man harmed America's image outside of America'.

Sounds like the kind of punishment Donald Trump could get behind. Those Americans who think the Constitution still ought to be respected probably not so much.

The Constitution offers no protection or remedy for citizens committing crimes while abroad.

Double jeopardy does not apply to convictions outside the US.  Any school has rules for conduct on school trips.  Will Trump request leniency?  Why should he.

What US crime did these 3 basketball players commit?

These 3 men have harmed America's image when in a foreign country. America should punish them, because this will send a strong message to all Americans. It means America is actually saying "when our citizens are outside of America, they must not cause problems, we will not tolerate our own citizens harming other countries, we do not wish our image and reputation to be harmed by our own people".

I have high hopes for President Trump's visit. As for the 3 players, if they are proven guilty then they should be made to serve the same sentence as anybody else. I don't see them getting any help as we all already know how President Trump feels about athletes acting disrespectful.

Okay, lets get away from these basketball players.

In the above link, Trump has helped America export about $250 billion of goods and deals to China. Them basketball players, IF they had of derailed such massive trade deals, well, that would have been very serious.

Yes, Boeing are selling 300 jets to China, worth $37 billion.

The idiocracy...

Bloomberg is a great deal more cautious than you. The 'deal' is mostly MOU's which will likely take years to materialise, if at all, if Trump derails sentiment. Currently the mix is unknown of the Boeing deal, are the orders all new or a mixture of prior commitment and future intent? In addition Trump failed to achieve any new business of significance from his visits to Japan and South Korea. Not that surprising with the decimation of senior personnel in the State Department and other agencies since Trump came to power.

Trump has changed his mind and will now attend the East Asia Summit in Manila, let's see how he handles himself.

The above Youtube link, is actually Mr Trump's granddaughter singing in Mandarin Chinese. The little angel's name is Arabella Kushner. Yes, this is the way to win hearts and minds. This is diplomacy at it's best.

This will produce a massively positive image of America, to China. Yes, this is the way forward. This is how things are suppose to be.

I am not sure what planet you are from.   For one thing,  Xi has already heard his grand daughter sing in Mandarin when he was in the US.  Second, who in their right mind brings a video of their grand child singing (again) to a meeting like this?   Oh, yes...Trump.

The only people impressed with this is Trump and a few of his loyal acolytes.

Imagine the reaction in Thailand if she sang songs in Thai. The Thais would rave endlessly, as are the Chinese.

No matter what you think of Trump, he definitely scored some points with the Chinese with this.

Trump is a narcissist and the one who is enamored is Trump with China.   He loves dictatorships and having the complete control that the Xi has over the actions of the citizens.

The US taxpayers have spent a lot of money to send the President to Asia to actually do some important work.   Videos of his grand kids doesn't quite make the cut.

As for the comparison to the Thai populace, I rest my case.

Trump's enterprises (hotels, etc) buy nearly all their materials from China.  Probably 100% of steel and aluminum from China.  And possibly 100% of furniture, furnishings, appliances, other building materials, etc.   So much for 'keep jobs in America.....'

Naturally, from his perspective, he should kiss Chinese ass.

Plus, it's fun to watch what Trump said about China while on the campaign trail ....vs what he says when in China. 180 degree difference, but we're used to Trump vacillating more times than a flag in a cyclone.

China likes Trump because he's such a dufus and because he won't say anything about Taiwan, Tibet, or S.China Sea.   Trump's attitude towards int'l affairs (not counting N.Korea and Iran) is the same as China's:   None have ever seen an oppressive gov't that they don't like.
