Pins of honour for elderly who give up govt subsidy

By The Nation

Elderly people who agree to donate the monthly subsidy they receive from the government to the Elderly Fund will receive pins of honour.

Kobsak Pootrakool, a vice minister in the Office of Prime Minister, revealed on Tuesday that the Cabinet had approved the initiative to allow elderly people to donate the monthly subsidy that they receive from the government to the Elderly Fund from December 1 onwards.

At present, the government provides a monthly subsidy to about 8 million Thais aged 60 and above. The monthly subsidy ranges between Bt600 to Bt1,000 per person, depending on their age. The older they are, the higher the subsidy.

Of the subsidy recipients, only 2 million live below the poverty line – a household where each member earns less than Bt3,000 a month.

“Interested donors can contact local authorities to make donations,” Kobsak said, adding that donations to the Elderly Fund are tax deductible.

Why not? In a country where you can get a paratrooper tag for jumping 12 m on a rubber rope. What's next? 3 stripes golden epaulets for honest cab and tuk tuk dtivers?

Hey anyone can become a 'general' here..just look at whos running the show. People that should be sitting around all day "busy" running the corner mom and pop store.

Don't forget, all you Thai bashing whinging Poms....  it is voluntary.

So they are going to give a medal to those who are most likely cheating welfare but are willing to give it up for a medal? More levels than a simple over done catch cry.

Welfare in Thailand 555...

While the rich still line their pockets through corruption and cheating, while they ponder spending enough money on a submarine that could support 100,000's of older citizens they want to take away what meager amount they do give them and swap it for a tacky medal.

If there are cheats one can hardly wonder why.

Life is hard enough, in the villages in particular, without pulling sh1t like this.
