World Scrabble Champion is Akshay from Bahrain as Thais miss out

The latest world Scrabble champion is Akshay Bhandarkar from Bahrain.

He beat Peter Moses of Nigeria in the best of seven game final 4-3 on Sunday.

Earlier in qualifying the Thai team of two experts was left agonizingly short after Jakkrit Klaphajone a doctor from Chiang Mai and Bangkokian Thacha Koowirat finished 5th and 7th respectively.

Our picture shows the final board of Game 7.

Akshay powered ahead with UNCINATE (having a hooked shape). This was later cleverly added to making RUNCINATE (having saw toothed divisions) with BEER on the top.

Moses' fate was sealed when he added a disallowed S to RUNCINATE and missed a turn to leave Akshay - originally from India - as the easy winner of the final decider.

Meanwhile more than a thousand school children played Scrabble - called Crossword Game in Thailand - and other educational games at the ECC sponsored Triple Game Challenge at Central shopping center in Rayong on Saturday and Sunday.

Tawan Phaephonsiri won the Open Division with Aekaphun in second and British Thai resident from Bangkok Gerry Carter in third.

The internationally acclaimed Princess Cup featuring world number one Nigel Richards from New Zealand will be played at Central Bang Na from November 24th to 26th inclusive.

Nigel finished third at the WESPA (World English Language Scrabble Players Association) championships in Nairobi considered one of two world championships in the sport of crossword gaming.

Scrabble enjoys the patronage of the Thai Royal family in Thailand as well as sponsorship from big business.

That's called globalization.

Congratulations Gerry Carter!

The word in line O going down is something you can’t say in the US anymore because ignorant people will start screaming bloody murder because it sounds like a racial slur.
