Father shoots his son dead - but there are extenuating circumstances

Police in downtown Chumporn in the south of Thailand were called to a house after a father shot his son dead.

But the son had been on a rampage and had poured gasoline around the house.

As he threatened to light it his father decided to take decisive action - Somkiat Thongrort shot his 42 year old son in the chest with a 9mm gun.

Cops found three shell casings.

They were told that trouble began at the Muang district house next to the temple of Wat Khu Khut in the morning on Sunday when Rujikorn Thongrort arrived in a drunken state and started smashing things and kicked in a window.

A relative called 191 but later in the day around 7pm the situation erupted again with the son pouring gasoline around the house. There were several people including young ones in the house.

This time the father took the law into his own hands. The Chumporn police found him sitting at home in tears with family members around him.

He has been charged with willful killing. But he was immediately bailed.

The son arrives drunk and tosses stuff about, the police are called  but do not show

up. The son pours gas about the place where there are other people at as well.

What else could the dad do? Continue to wait for the police and watch the drunken son

torch the place.  In my opinion he did what he thought was necessary and probably saved

lives,  Son got his just desserts.

Geezer

He spoiled his son from the time he was born, telling him how special he was. The Thai people have to begin to tell their sons, from an early age- "you are nothing special. You are nothing until you become a productive person, and give something back to your people. Your sister is far smarter than you, more ambitious, and capable of so much more. Women run this country. Go out there and prove yourself. Until then, you are just an ordinary person."

His level of parenting was so poor, he had to resort to putting his son down.

A leg shot might have been an alternative if you had no other way of stopping him but even that is drastic.

Yes, you are right. But this needs some professionalism as cops get in academy. Average civilians are definitely not used to aim a gun at a human, let alone pulling the trigger...

Set aside the father/son aspect - This was someone dousing the house with gasoline and threatening to light it. I would say it is clear cut self defence.

Shooting someone in the leg doesn't prevent them from lighting the fire and, if you've ever seen how quickly a gasoline fire can spread, you would be in real fear for your life.

IMHO

Complete ridiculousness. The Thai boys need to hear some stuff that makes them humble. Despite the fact that the parents are always telling them how great they are, a high percentage of them grow up without confidence, without much self esteem, and without much sense of self. So, the system is not working.

What do intelligent people do, when confronted with a system that is not working? They try something different. Doing otherwise is just digging a deeper hole, for your son.

Sure, there needs to be some balance. But, telling a boy alot of nonsense, just because it has been done that way for centuries improves nothing and nobody.

Don,t know what your background was but I find your thinking a bit harsh. Maybe you want to

re fraze your wording. The problem with children/ teenagers today is the modern world where they

idolise successful people pop stars and the like and they think they should be likewise, and that is

a problem. Good parenting is what is needed reward them when they do right, correct them when

they do wrong.System what system are you referring to please enlighten me.

The antiquated and overly traditional Thai system, of coddling, spoiling, and allowing many of the boys to grow up without any real degree of emotional development, sense of self, or sense of self. Sure, some support on the part of the parents is a very good thing. But, support that is earned and deserved. The kind of support that allows him to evolve into a productive member of society, without a sense of self entitlement.

As far as correcting them when they do wrong, that is not something I see very much from parents, in this day and age, anywhere in the world. This current generation is a source of great worry for many of us. Parents are supposed to be parents. Too many parents so desperately want to be friends with their kids, that they lose sight of the bigger picture. Kids thrive on boundaries. A lack of boundaries can be devastating for children.

And yes, popular culture is a very corrosive aspect of modern day life. And as Sean Parker recently stated, too much technology can also be a very destructive force for kids. Set the limits. Always establish boundaries.

Now I do like living here, but they really can be a bad-tempered lot and aren't afraid to show it. I suppose one compensation is that they are types who will stab you in the front, so you do know where you stand before it comes to violence.

Maybe if the police had done the job they are paid for the ending would have been totally different

Herein lies the rub. The police are NOT paid to practice law enforcement. A starting cop makes 8,000 baht per month. A captain of a decent sized department makes 15,000 per month. And THEY have to pay for some of their equipment. How does one support a family on that? It is my humble opinion, that there has always been a quid pro quo between the government, and the police. We will give you barely enough to live on, with the proviso that you are free to do as you like, with the franchise. It saves the government billions of dollars per year. And in exchange, they get some of the poorest law enforcement on the planet, and zero traffic safety, resulting at least partially in the highest death toll on planet earth, per capita. Congratulations for a job well done. LOL. The continued work of a succession of administrations completely lacking vision, morality, and concern for the general public (super rich excluded).

Perhaps the cops in the academy get this kind of training here. Not sure. I know they do NOT get this kind of training in the US. Up until now, they are taught to shoot to kill. Only one department in the US (I believe it is Knoxville, Tennessee) is teaching the police to talk a man down, or take a man down without using lethal force, and they are having great success with it. Shame on the others.

I'd say it was an educated guess based on Thailand's notorious vicious, treacherous FACE cycles...

Face is no doubt, the greatest form of weakness, a human can engage in. Many will say it is societal, cultural, etc. No matter. It is the absolute and complete lack of the ability to introspect, and look within for the source of any problem, shortcoming, conflict, or issue. It is the polar opposite of spirituality, and therefore an absolute scourge on Buddha, and all of the precepts he taught. By practicing face, you are denying your spiritual heritage. You are refusing to man up. To take responsibility for your actions. If a man or a woman cannot, and will not take responsibility for their actions, the problems they create, the mistakes they make, and the issues they involve themselves in, what are they? Are they still an adult? Are they a complete individual, if they allow themselves to be limited by such infinitely small social convention?

Who cares what people think of you? For those of us with high self esteem, it just does not matter. Sure, close friends and family. But strangers on the street? Who gives a rat's butt about this? It means nothing what they think, nor what they say about you. They count for nothing. They are just people, and people you do not know, nor will ever see again. Face is rife with self doubt, and by subscribing to this weakness, and man or woman is made a far lesser person. For those of us with high self esteem, we know who we are. What others think, what society thinks, what a guy or gal thinks, means less than zero.

Real men or women, simply own a situation, and take responsibility for their errors or mistakes. Small men, social deviants, or emotional adolescents deflect, obfuscate, attempt to confuse, and do everything in their power to deny that they made a mistake, or that they are responsible in any way, or on any level. They make up narratives about fake news, or alternative facts. Anything to avoid looking within, for the source of the problem. Anything.

The entire country is suffering from a declining tourism industry. And that will not change. It is a permanent declining trend. For a hundred valid reasons. As I stated previously:

I have a friend who recently stayed on Samui. He stayed at a resort that has 54 rooms. Normally, they are 100% booked, from about Dec. 20th, to about January 5th. This year, they only had 22 rooms filled. They are down 60% for the peak season. Many resorts are experiencing similarly alarming numbers. These hotels counted on the government to support them, when they spend millions on their properties, and the government has let them down, once again. They continue to drop the ball, at every opportunity.

They trot out these projections, every time they get scared, and see the numbers dropping. Who was it that said, if you tell the people something often enough, eventually they will believe it? Well, not us. We are not buying your simpleton lies. Tourism is declining by the day. Perhaps 50 years from now, in a hospitality industry class at a university here, they will discuss how Thailand lost the golden egg of Western tourism. Those tourists, unlike most Chinese tourists, spent anywhere from $100 a day, to over $1,000 a day. They brought real money into the country, and in exchange, were treated with utter and complete disregard, scammed, disrespected, and abused. Eventually, most said no more. Thailand thought the country was something very special, and that nobody would ever say no, or find alternative places to visit. The fact is that there are countless other spots, that offer better service, more expertise in food and beverage (especially wine), reasonable import duties to sustain a luxury goods market, better training, and far better english skills. Thailand simply lost sight of the big picture, and had very little vision, with regard to big spending tourists, who need to be catered to, instead of scorned.
