Porn, Teen Sex And Gambling On The Rise

Can believe. Even underage girls are going rampant in KL. You see them in clubs wearingw what looks like bikinis. They like having the men fight over them as well. Most are from villages and just go wild! A friends ex had to keep coming to retrieve his step children (15 and 17) from bars wearing minis etc. Girls as young as 14 were hanging out looking for men (white guys etc).

In Singapore the stress of life/studying has led to uni entrance exam ages to indule in sex/drink/drug orgies. They just go wild.

Teenagers want to <deleted>. Nothing will stop them!

Really? KL & Singapore you say.... Hmmm... I might be away for a little while... :o

Actually there's real no role models for the promiscuos behaviour of adolences in Thailand. A survey carried out last year showed that 73% of politicians had at least one mia noi and my wife assures me a very large percentage of Thai guys prefer watching porn rather than engaging in foreplay prior to sex. So there goes the main role models, politicians and parents, who can these young kids go to for some guidance.

I would never say politicians are role models. Are you kidding?

Having sampled all three "vices" before the age of 14 (sex - 13; porn - 11; gambling - 7), I wonder what all the fuss is about? It has done no harm to me, having had a successful corporate career, ran businesses in 3 continents and have generally had a good life.

Perhaps they should be actually promoted?

Teen sex...

here is a true story(sure to be repeated all over Thailand)told to me by a very good Thai lady friend of mine,

when she was sixteen she was already working in a factory, was very chaste, and completely ignorant about sex,and ignored any"come on's" or advances from men,

that Xmas their Chinese bosses threw them a party(with lots of free booze),as a result, she and four of her friends fell alseep in a room at the factory after drinking copious amounts of wine, all four woke up in the morning deflowered, covered in blood from the legs down,in tremendous pain, and with their new "Husbands" asleep beside them. When the men/boys woke up,they were completely calm and showed absolutely no guilt in revealing the set up.

"Well,we've done it now,we had sex last night,so you have to stay with me" explained my friends Rapist/new love...and so she did,and of course being completely ignorant of contraception she became pregnant within months...

I have heard this story,or variations on the theme many, many, many times from many Thai ladies over the last two years.

The results in a westernised,1st world country would have been a rape charge, prison term, and pariah status for the boy's/men involved...in The land of smiles, the girls feel guilty, dirty, and submit to a relationship that they had no clue about, and were forced into...

So as far as I'm concerned the"shocked",hypocritical people bitching about the tiny minority of Thai teens that actually have ACCESS to computers/porn/gambling can shut the ###### up,and address the real issues.

this report just says that Thailand is like every other country. Report has no value at all.

Yes...!

Can we get the links to the original study, George?

What was the sample size (n = ?); what were their methods? Can we trust this report at all?

Could be lots of hoo-haa over very little... Can we get the facts here? Can we get the opinions of statistics critics, too?

Many so-called "reports" out there are little more than hot air serving who knows who's agenda!

This will all calm down with the full establishment of Sharia law in Thailand.

Things are already better in those three southernmost provinces. No, scratch that, those five southernmost provinces. No, scratch that, all the way up to Phuket southernmost provinces.................

You can see where the leadership is coming from, being Islamist and all that...........

Sharia law is the new law in Thailand.

The report (as reported) is a little light on substance and a bit high on generalisation

e.g. what was the sample size, where was the sample - geographically AND demographically - if it was conducted in the north, then the racial slurs are a major trouble-pot brewing given the huge mix of racial origins up here and the general distrust / dislike of wannabe-HiSo central Thais. But if it was conducted only in Bangkok and surrounds, then it could have economic impacts as most "sub-race" kids were likely to be luk-krung and expats kids.

The pornography issue is really a double-edged sword - traditionalists will state it is an erosion of the traditional moral codes upon which Thailand is built, and a corruption of the innocence of youth (watch out for more clamp-downs) whilst liberalists will claim it is replacing the underdeveloped sex-education system that should be in place in High Schools for Matayom 4. 5. & 6 students (as it is in the UK at least (or was 30-ish years ago)). With American produced porn having compulsory condom wearing featuring more frequently, this may be a good thing for developing countries like Thailand, where it may lead to more "acceptability of the practice and reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS.

I'm all for the reduction of the growth of "new" smokers, even though I smoke and connot for the life of me manage to quit - the effects I now suffer in middle-age, I would not wish on the young. As for drinking - where are the responsible adults and older siblings in all this, they should be teaching the teenagers about sensible drinking as I was lucky enough to have done for me.

Overall, the greatest problem about these "vices" being visible to the early-teens must rest with the Thai governmental and business community - if the former was to enforce the zoning laws that DO exist in Thailand, and the latter were to obey them, then all the "influence" businesses could be safely clumped together away from the inquisitive eyes of the young and with less exposure would be less temptation to experiment.

The TV companies and the parents have a role to play regarding viewing choice. The primary factor being that Thai parents do not instill enough discipline into the very young Thai kids. Is it really correct for a 3-5 year old to be running round or watching TV until 10pm or later? In my youth, such kids were in bed immediately after the BBC aired Magic Roundabout at 5-45pm, and pre-teens in bed before the 9 oclock news. From that come the UK broadcasting industry's "9pm watershed" after which it is deemed acceptable to air programs of more adult oriented content - violence, sex, invasive medical documentaries etc. The cable / sattelite TV generation has lost that cut off because of how those companies rotate programming, and the terrestrial companies are following suit in order to capture viewers, and thus advertisers.

All of this is the results of an evolving society and culture. In many ways it is "Som Nam Na" - you wanted the benefits of westernisation and did not want the effort of managing the side effects, now you are paying the price of that laziness - you had visibility of what it had done to the west before you began westernising, and you were too thoughtless (or too arrogant) to think it could happen here despite the warnings from westerners, which you ignored.

can we take a look at the details of this so-called study? How was it done?

Yes - who are these people ? Hypocrites !

"Premature sex among highschool- and university students" :D:o:D:D:D

Do they expect the Thai youth to be different from other youths across the world ?

We are more and more getting a picture of a "want to be" puritan country.

"Decent, wealthy tourists wanted - prostitution prohibited - gambling prohibited - pornsites blocked - a.s.o. - this list is long.

I read an interesting quote from Mark Twain this morning by Gordon Brown, prospective PM in UK, in a report of an interview yesterday.

Apparently he, Mark Twain that is, arrived in a small town, noticed the gambling, drinking and prostitution, and commented this was no place for a Puritan. So he did not stay a Puritan for long!

Premature sex / university? Who are these people??????

Yup! The sky is falling again ... I told you! It all started with those beer commercials. Before you know it, teenagers are looking at titties on their PC's. Of course ... if the world was Islamic .... don't laugh ... that's exactly where the so-called "caretaker government" is taking the beautiful country of Thailand ....

Now, all you gals get off that bar counter and go buy yourselves a habib. Leow-leow!!!

The sooner the Buddhists stand up and reclaim their beautiful country of Thailand, the better!!!!

Virgil, Out!

Well...

It is actually a fact that lots young teenage schoolgirls these days are selling sexual services to whom ever pays. It happens in Bangkok and it happens in the small town where I live as well. So what do they need money for? New fashion clothes, new mobile phones, fill up their phone accounts, makeup, petrol for motorbikes (small towns), cafe socializing (Bangkok), partying, etc.

All just for the poorer girls to stay as cool as the girls from richer families, which easially can afford all this from her parents bank account. There are lots of parents that just don't know anything what their daughter is doing and where she gets money from, to buy all this stuff.

Another effect of this, is that the AIDS/HIV is on the rise among teenagers. Many older males particulary choose younger teenagers for sex (for payment) since they do belive that those young ones don't have any sexual decieses of any kind (including AIDS/HIV). They don't see the use of having any kind of protection for this matter, which will end up transfer decieses to the young ones instead. Which in turn will forward this to the next sex partner, and so on. There are also young teenage boys that are selling sexual services for the same reason as the girls.

My wife have been telling that all this fixation about money, fashion and expensive gadgets and living, has been on the rise since Taksin became priminister. Before that, people waren't that greedy as they are now... She says.

And yes... It's true. The young kids today doesn't have any ideals och proper role models to look up to. Young boys often discover that their very own father is having mea-nois or paying for sex at the local karaoke's. So what will then become of that young boy them?

Remember the old song "Cats in the Cradle"... -I'm gonna be like you dad!

Sadly but true. The thai society really lacks of people that cares about other ones. Especially the young ones. I don't mean lack of people that just putting up new rules. But lack of people that really cares at ground level.

That was not the case when my wife was young, she often tells me.

Any chance of dropping a few names Nemo? I get around a few pubs (Beach Club, Aloha, Rum Jungle etc) and clubs (Zouk, Ruums, Maison etc) and have yet to witness bikinis. Maybe I need new spectacles. The girls in the clubs do, for sure, wear short skirts and almost revealing tops (they're quite strict on revealing cleavage here) but nothing outrageous (pity :o ).

Can't comment on the underage stuff as the press here are "encouraged" to avoid bad news of that ilk but I haven't seen any obvious jail bait running around, but that's not to say it don't exist.

Haven't been to Singers for around ten years now as I don't particularly like the place.

Agree with your last statement, whatever the youth want to do they will do it regardless of what their parents, politicians or the police say.

Also agree with earlier posts regarding the validity of this survey. Who did it, where, what was sample size etc etc are not mentioned. Without that demographic information it is totally worthless. But I dare say some puffed up old worthless politico is going to turn it into his little soap box and demand that the goverment crack down on something.

My wife's older sister was also raped but without the aid of alcohol. It happened in the forest while she was picking vegetables and she married the guy to save face. Now he is living off of her wages and won't even be bothered to take their kid to school.

For some reason “Child Watch” seems to come across as a bit of an alarmist. Reading the posts I have to agree that they are getting funded to make reports that show that young Thais are just as human as young people from other countries. Unless I missed it I saw no suggestions on how to change or modify the situation, and that is the whole reason people or organizations get funded to find answers and not to just state the obvious. That in turn brings up the question of who’s pockets are getting lined with a funding kickback.

Funny how Fox News et al never seem to get round to their trademark exposes of this kind of thing, doesn't fit their agenda or enable their anchor persons to advance their careers.

It's also sad how many Thais will horribly mistreat their own kind just to save face. If there were one national trait the Thais would be better off without it is this "face" thing.

My sister in law is subjecting herself to this slug in order to save face, not mistreating anyone. As I gather it this slug wanted to marry her and she turned him down. So to get what he wanted he raped her so no one else in the village could have her and she had no choice but to marry him. The ones that are suffering the most from this are the children. The 12 year old daughter wants to go to school but he won't get off his ass to take her so she dropped out. The mother works 14 hours a day to support the family and had to take off from work to pick up her daughter from school when she did get there. The daughter did not want to be a burden on her mother so she quit school at age 12 and is now working herself.

From The BKK Post.

http://www.afa.org.sg/issue/issue27/13.htm

Thai parents have always frowned on premarital sex, and yet their message is falling on deaf ears. Why are Thai teens doing it sooner than their peers in the West? Why is it so hard to educate youngsters about the birds and the bees?

Despite Thai parents’ stern preaching on virginity and their rigid stance against premarital sex, the problem of pregnancies outside wedlock remains rife. Thai girls have been taught since childhood to rak nuan sa-nguan tua, meaning to take pride in being “untouched” and “sexually reserved”.

Yet, the statistics on first-time sexual experience, pregnancy and abortion among Thai youngsters are much higher than for their peers in Western countries. According to Public Health Ministry statistics, the teen abortion rate in Thailand is as high as 16.2 per 1,000 births. “This is pretty startling compared to 3.1 per 1,000 in Germany, 4.2 in the Netherlands and 8.9 in France,” said Ruj Komonbut, an AIDS activist and mass communications lecturer at Thammasat University’s Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communications, citing a study by North Carolina University at Charlotte.

A very good article, IMHO. It basically says that a "just say no" campaign results in MORE unwanted activity. While this is hardly unknown in the West, it is HARDLY a result of globalization. In fact, more information = better informed choices. The more you open up your borders to information, the better the decision making of your population becomes. Teens included!

I think Thai teens are betting heavily on football.Just look at the football newspaper available at the 7/11 newstand & others road side newstand etc....One week at least 2 or 3 issues of these football newspaper which have match preview, team news and odds all sold out within hours after delivered to the newstand.I don"t think those people who read this are just "pure" football fans, they are betting on it instead. This for sure will cause social problem :o

I think what we really need are more Mormons. Or, maybe we could let the ultra conservative Christians handle things. Better yet, we could try to mirror the way the U.S. has handled this situation. Violence on TV, get real. I would walk around Bangkok in any area at any time of night. In the area that I'm from in New York City i wouldn't even walk to the corner store at night time. All this bitching about "the kids," "the kids" also have a brain believe it or not, and if people take time to talk to them occasionally it most likely wouldnt matter what the hel_l is on TV. Thailand is doing better than most other countries in my opinion. Porn, oh no! I remember when a 7th grader was raped in my middle school by a 6th grader. So, i find this worry a bit hard to take serious. For a capital city, BKK is almost as safe as I could ever imagine. hel_l, let them <deleted>.. Teach them about condoms.. At least they aren't shooting each other. Sorry if i seem a bit bold, it just seems like a case of reality.

My wife's cousin was raped by a male many years ago, when she was around 18 of age. And the strange thing was that the womans mother was happy as he_ll about it, since that man came from a rich family. My wife actually told me that the mother seemed to be wishing this to happen for a long time. I'll guess that mother were looking forward to upgrading her own financial situation by forcing that man to marry her daughter. Maybe she had the same expectation as a mother would have when their daughter is getting married to a farang (if you guys excuse me).

As I mentioned in another posting here... Being a woman and sister in this country, could be very hard. All while the boys and brothers are getting totally spoiled at the same time. I'll guess that there is lot of women here that suffers from psycic traumas, neglection or bad treatment from the childhood. Maybe thats why many thai-farang marriages doesn't hold that long, especially when the woman is moving abroad. If a family or parent in my country would treat their daughter like this, the authorities would most certainly get in and place that child in a safer environment. I often find that many parents here doesn't have any concept at all, on how to raise children. Some better families do, but far many poorer and lower status families doesn't...
