Some 50 members of a network of Songkhla-Pattani residents march against a proposed coal-fired power plant project on Friday.

They walk along the Pattani-Hat Yai road (Highway A43) as part of their first lap in a 75km-long march from Songkhla’s Thepa district to Muang district where Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha will preside over a mobile Cabinet meeting on November 28.

The group aims to arrive on the same day as the premier to file a petition against the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand’s plans, which they claim would have serious adverse effects on local communities.

Turn the power off completely and see how that affects them.  NIMBY  is alive and well even in Thailand. I wonder how many overseas do-gooder are involved in this.

Bullshit, the sun delivers about 1300 times more energy, than we ever need. If Thailand does the right thing, and promote and subsidize solar heating and photo voltaic panels on every roof, plus the possibility to feed the grid, there will be no need for any coal fired plant, which takes six years to build, and is hopefully obsolete by then. The only thing to do, for our self imposed PM, is,to take the paragraph 44 and tell Thailand, lets go for it. But even thinking from 12 to noon is too much for Thai politicians, and. Mr. Prayut too. I am sorry to say that, but is the <deleted> truth, just looking at Germany at 53 degrees North having a sustainable  energy output of 85% of the total consumption at the max, and I tell you it is damn cold and cloudy there.

Turn off the interconnecter with the nukes in France that provide base load power and see how you go.

Promote and SUBSIDISE solar says it all really. Then join South Australia as having the highest cost electricity in the world.  Ignore the massive blackout that occurred recently of course.

I have nothing against solar power,  indeed I have a PV installation at our place in Queensland ( which is not cost effective as the Govt increased electricity prices and introduced a 'service fee'to compensate for the loss of generation income) and it should be part of the energy mix including other clean power such as nuclear. But wind and solar will not provide base load power for the foreseeable future.

What part of my original statement was bullshit?

By the way the thread is about a coal fired plant..... Not alternatives.

Hey Thailand go to India and China and see their shiny new power plants and protest in those countries

as they are still building lots of plants. Both those countries know it will still be years before solar and

bird killing windmills, etc are ready to replace Coal fired or Nuke power plants, take off your rosy

colored glasses while you are at it.

Good luck with that. China is commissioning a new coal fired power plant at the rate of one per week and will do so until 2030. By then the storage issues of renewables may be sorted out.  But how long will the lithium last?

1. Germany is still exporting energy, and does not rely on France at all.

2. Blame your government for their policy to tax sustainable forms of energy.

3. Wind and solar power are the greatest job creators in the U.S, even with Trump as POTUS.

4. We remember the project DESERTEC, which was cancelled due to possible unrest within the Sahara desert. If you want to learn more: "

The Technologies are available and already in commercial use

The DESERTEC Concept integrates all types of renewable energy. The installed capacity of wind energy and photovoltaics is already growing strongly. Concentrating Solar-thermal Power (CSP) is however an important technology in the DESERTEC Concept because it can deliver dispatchable power that compensates for the fluctuations of wind energy and photovoltaics.

The technologies for the production and long-distance transmission of clean power from deserts are available and already in commercial use, for example in Southern Spain and in the USA.

5. The problem is, that the fossil fuel industries have a strong lobby (see the pipelines and their spills in the U.S. -wiki).

6. The Australian government should just takeover the concept of desertec and install this on a large scale in the Outback. Space and sun is there in abundance. Overhead production during the daytime can be used to produce H2, which then can secure the electrical demand during the night. Furthermore we do need governments, which are promoting, not penalizing clean energy resources.

7. Finally I come to your "Bullshit", that is your sentence: " Turn the power off completely and see how that affects them. " Nobody wants that, nobody does it. But a coal fired plant needs six years to build, and the output can hardly be adjusted, contrary to a gas powered plant (construction time about four years), which can produce energy according to the current demand, and has far less emissions, than a coal fired plant. Besides, coal has to be transported by ship and rail, loaded and unloaded, which affects the pristine sea and the clean air in that area. Therefore even a gas powered plant would be more efficient and much cleaner, than a coal fired plant. Nevertheless I would promote wind generators, as well as thermo-solar installations East of the road 2004, as well as further down South in Pattani.

8. Mankind has to do this transition towards clean energy anyhow, and why wait, when the arctic is melting and the sea levels are already rising?
