I pondered over this topic for about 5mins trying to think of something sensible to say about this

and couldn't

I did think of 'something' to say............Government just wants to collect the money off drivers before they become another Thai road trauma statistic! :coffee1:

Yet another 'face saving' diversion from not addressing (because they have no ideas or no will) what most modern people would consider a real problem i.e. the terrible road toll in the Kingdom.

In the context of ASEAN - perfect! No need to watch their own countrymen but keep a weather lifting eye on all those Alien roaming the Thai roads.

It proves, once more again, that ASEAN in general and AEC2015 in particular is not worth the paper once it comes to free movement of people. I am a frequent overland traveller, the paperwork for getting into Laos consists of an International Transport Permit, a duplicate "Information on Conveyance", a "Crew List" and a "Passenger Manifest" - apart from the original blue book. All this to be completed and three sets of photocopies to be provided. It is not possible to legally enter Cambodia, Vietnam and Myanmar has its own procedure on the issue.

Cargo from Thailand to Siem Reap (Cambodia, near Angkor Wat) needs to be offloaded from the Thai truck and loaded onto a Cambodian registered truck - the stories are endless!

Yet another Nabob emerges for his ablutions with an "idea" - no research, not though through, no previous experiences cited, np thpought given to how it would be implemented.

This is totally contrary to the aims of the free market which is based on the free flow of goods and traffic...this will just replace one line of traffic with another as people wait to pay tolls and receive their GPS.

Of course it will allow officials to stop people and collect money off them........a procedure in Thailand that has been well documented as open to o riddled with corruption.

4) foreigners affiliated with organized crime, 20 years in Thailand jail or pay 15 million baht fine and lose right to ever enter Thailand.

5) cought selling or importing/exporting drugs, forfeit entry rights forever, 7 million baht fine, unable to pay fine equals 1 million baht reduction for each year served in a thai jail under good behavior.

7) disrespect thai culture in a flagrant manner is expulsion from Thailand for 10 years minimum up to a maximum to life depending on level of flagrantcy.

Am sick of seeing foreigners in Thailand doing all of the above, especially the sex addicts, and rude Russian and Germans fighting. You are ruining Thai culture.

Anyone using the word "culture" like this clearly doesn't understand the word, but it is convenient to promulgate prejudices.

BTW - has this poster costed these fines - e.g. how much will be raised and who will handle the money and see that iti is correctly distributed to his/her chosen causes?

"Projections"? - worked out on the back of a cigarette packet??

fpr a further example of un-costed policy proposals, see above!

Like to see the ratio of foreign driver accidents per population to good old Thai drivers

Be careful what you ask for.

In Chonburi and Rayong, which allegedly has the highest risk of death, there is also the highest preponderance of foreign "drivers"

you also use the word "drivers" - which I presume means you are referring to 4 wheeled vehicles, where Thailand has a similar death rate to th USA.

1.5 baht per kilometer - isn't that the rate you get charged in a taxi after the 37 baht fee?  So your car becomes a personal taxi meter once you enter Thailand?? Wonder if it charges at 2 baht a minute when stuck in traffic like a taxi also?

I will be very surprised if this ever works - installing GPS on cars entering the country - I mean most of the CCTV cameras don't work and that is pretty basic tech in a stationary object a, so i cannot see something more complex and highly mobile getting very far.

500 baht for bring a car in job done - why make it needlessly complex and expensive to set up. A one off fee requires minimal investment in administration and paperwork and is much more efficient.

absolutely !
In Europe, not so long ago and if my memory does not err me, we were buying temporary road tax certificates at the Swiss border
Nobody complained, except truckers who had a choice to use fast and safe roads, or to drive around the country.

I think the ultimate objective will indeed be that all falang have to be tracked. Given that most have a smart phone it's already happening anyway, so no difference being tracked by the Thais as well. Then they can tell if they can fine us for staying somewhere other than our residence without doing TM30- gonna make billions of baht on that one :shock1:.

There  seems  to be some  holes  in that plan  via  sim  cards. Bought a  new  sim  card here  in a  mall in Korat  3  days  back.  50  Bht. Choice  of  numbers.  Khp  khun. No  ID asked  for or  any questions  at  all.

I only remember a few in the Hanover area in the 70's. They were folded up from the middle so they were like the top half of a circle. I was told at the time they could be be unfolded to show temporary restrictions on that particular road

Think they got folded down when the Dutch holiday makers, famed for driving in the left lane, came with their caravans, and for road maintenance works.

Is that a foreign car which is owned by a Thai or is it a foreigner's car which is a locally bought car

This is not our problem this belongs to the house-master/hotel/condo, we only need to report to the local police station or do a TM28 which does not carry a fine

If Thailand were to slim this down a bit and impose a ban or crippling toll on all non resident private vehicles heading for any of the Islands for Christmas, NY or Songkran per annum the people that actually live there might occasionally make it into top gear while heading to Tescos etc instead of emulating the M25 on a bank holiday w/e.

Im sure all the people who live on the islands and actually work or own businesses would just love your idea, it's not like they are financially dependent on the few busy weeks of the year, is it?

I get that you would like to see Thailand be as it was, say 50 years ago, however, the reality is if these "rules" are implemented you would see a mass exit of foreigners and an almost complete halt of incoming tourists.  The economy would tank and what is in place would crumble.  Everyone, ( except possibly the wealthy), would fall on hard times which nobody has seen in their lifetimes.  In other words, Thailand could fall into such chaos that even the military couldn't keep control of law and order.   It has taken a long time to get to this stage; you can't change the rules abruptly without major consequences ensuing.

A fee is a payment made for a service or right, you have listed 4 fines and 2 reasons to revoke a visa and just put them under the heading, "fees", do try to stay on topic.  As for your first suggestion, which is the only fee in the list, would that make Thailand the country with the most expensive tourist visa in the world?

People here overwhelmingly seem to think this is another dig at farangs, i.e. expats and tourists from the west.  Farangs driving a car over the border into Thailand will be a rare event in comparison.  The majority, of course, will be from neighbouring countries, Malaysia, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia .........

Not truckers, transport companies  and Switzerland is outside the EU....What happened to that system?

It's not just the money-there is another component to this scenario. Think about it!

You have, IMO, absolutely zero idea of what Thai culture is and it is probably the antithesis of what you believe.

Also, given you wrote nothing about the OP in your hate filled post, you are :offtopic:.

PS. why should visitors be required to subsidised the Thai sewerage infrastructure at a cost of 6 to 8 thousand baht per non married tourist?

In theory. In practice who ends up paying the fine for not doing a TM30?
