Britain nears deal with EU in Irish border Brexit talks - The Times

(Reuters) - Britain is close to a deal over the Northern Ireland border, after British officials made proposals this week to avoid a "hard border" in Ireland, according to Thursday's edition of The Times newspaper.

The EU has named the border as one of three issues on which "sufficient progress" must be made in order to allow progress to talks on a future trade agreement with Britain, crucial for British businesses.

EU leaders are preparing to offer a two-year Brexit transition deal as early as January after negotiators were close to a deal over the border, The Times said citing EU sources.

The EU will also pledge to speed up approval for a transition deal that maintains Britain's present relationship with the EU at a summit in Brussels next month, paper added.

Britain and the EU have reached agreement on a Brexit divorce bill which is likely to finally total around 50 billion euros, British newspapers reported on Tuesday, potentially heralding a breakthrough in the negotiations.

I suspect the 2 are closely related -  and the payment mentioned in the 2nd para. the reason why "negotiators were close to a deal over the border".....

Hard to see how in 24 hours it has gone from being the elephant in the room to being a mere distraction that can be easily sorted.  A two year transition period was expected but I cannot see how the two issues are connected.

Actually difficult to see how there CAN be a deal on the border issue - too many contradictions on all sides. A circle that's going to be difficult to square even for clever politicians, and there don't seem to be too many of those at Westminster.

Perhaps technology may provide some kind of solution (like e-passes as you whiz through the toll booths) ...

It's very easy to see why: money talks, bs walks. ROI is walking.

Ireland is threatening to block progress in Brexit negotiations without a guarantee on the border.  That has been said today so I think to say that a deal is close is a bit off the mark.

You should have taken notice of the UK government's slap-down of the ROI over this a few days ago. All has now become clear. ROI is now on it's own.

Not quite bingo, but you're not far off the mark.

You mean like we should have taken notice of the UK government's refusal to increase it's Brexit payment to the EU?

I've got some news for you:

Britain close to Irish border deal

"EU leaders are preparing to offer a two-year Brexit transition deal as early as January after negotiators said that they were close to a breakthrough over the Northern Ireland border.

British officials tabled proposals this week to avoid a “hard border” in Ireland that could unblock the last remaining major obstacle to a deal, The Times understands.

In return the EU will pledge at a summit in Brussels next month to speed up approval for a transition deal that maintains Britain’s present relationship with the EU, reassuring businesses that might otherwise begin implementing plans for a hard Brexit.

Indeed!

May should tell the DUP to take a hike and keep the 1 billion.

Glaringly obvious that NI should stay in the customs union at least!
