Cooked rices has been 25bht/kg (5bht/portion) in Chiang Mai as long as I've been here, today I went to buy 20bht of cooked sticky rice from my local rice shop, and the price has gone down to 20bht/Kg.

What is the world coming to? and how can the rice farmers survive at this price?

Be careful MJ, people have been scolded on here for talking about things that proper British gentlemen would not talk about back home.  Of course his business failed miserably and he has since disappeared.  Their is still a glut of rice.  The farmers should diversify their crops.  Cranberries, perhaps?

Reported price change at one shop of course means that it has changed everywhere.   Great logic guys.

The next great government scandal...the sticky rice price fixing scheme. Is there nothing sacred ? What's next ? Collusion among the Moo Ping street carts ?

I am going to stock up. I spend 700bt a year on the best rice so a 5bt/kg saving will probably get me a bottle of chang next December.

Happy days are here again.

I don't know how prevalent this price decrease is.

But if there is a general price decrease upcountry, it might result from Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives policies set in 2015 for a new scheme aimed at improving the quality of Thai sticky rice:

  • 40 sticky rice farmers will be selected from each of the districts in 15 provinces, most of which are in the Northeast
  • Under the scheme, dedicate 25% of their rice field in more than 10,000 rais to grow sticky rice

https://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/814512-thai-govt-approves-sticky-rice-growing-program-for-farmers/

So maybe there's now an oversupply?

95% of Thai sticky rice is consumed domestically.

Price of cooked rice is set by the government. All the shops will be charging the same.

I understand that the government through the Minister of Agriculture's Rice Cooperative sets the price for harvested sticky rice but couldn't find any cite for it setting the retail price of sticky rice after cooked by retail vendors.

Can you provide the supporting government authority?

There's all sorts of price controls on sold food items cooked and uncooked (food court prices also set by government).

Even Coca Cola is on the list of price controlled items.

I'm sure the list (in Thai) is published somewhere

, but it might be a secret!

Might be.

As of May 10, 2006 there were 35 items formally listed as under price control including Paddy/uncooked rice. https://thaicables.wordpress.com/2011/07/12/06bangkok4343-price-controls-in-thailand/

According to the Guide to Doing Business in Thailand 2016 there were 41 items:

"Currently there are 38 products and 3 services subject to price control under the Price of Goods and Services Committee’s announcement, which include sugar, eggs, milk, and licensing copyrighted music for commercial purposes." But no list!

Nothing really pinpointed sticky rice per se but ....

In 2013 the Commerce Ministry obtained the cooperation of 5,955 food retailers and street-food traders that they will sell their wares at 25- to 30Bt per menuhttp://www.thepigsite.com/swinenews/34420/food-price-controls-to-cut-cost-of-living-in-thailand/

Sell sticky rice as a "menu" item and it may be price-controlled.

He is not an example, which is why nobody holds him up as one (except ignorant people who think that his circumstances make him one).

Here is just one of the rules that he has repeatedly failed upon:

"A gentleman is never accidentally or unintentionally impolite"
