Charoen Pokphand Foods PLC (CPF) and its eight subsidiaries have been honoured with a plaque to mark International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2017.

The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security has presented the Outstanding Disability Employer plaque to the corporate group to recognise its current and planned employment of persons with disabilities.

Parisothat Punnabhum, CPF's senior executive vice president for human resources, said CPF places emphasis on promoting a self-supporting society. To promote the government's policy to enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities, CPF together with Charoen Pokphand Group chose to create additional jobs for the disabled rather than contribute to a disability fund.

This would allow them to stand on their own feet, support their families and lift their quality of life, said Parisothat. Their approach is a move toward sustainable social development, he said.

“CPF is proud to have teamed up with public agencies and civil society organisations in supporting persons with disabilities, so that they can support themselves. Several of them have turned into breadwinners, been able to live with dignity and returned benefits to their societies,” Parisothat said.

CPF has hired 723 persons with disabilities in line with the Persons with Disabilities Empowerment Act BE.2550.

CPF supports people in this group in thee ways. First, they employ people with disabilities for their nationwide office. As well, they work with community offices and public organizations for the disabled, hiring the disabled to carry out tasks in their own communities at schools, temples, tambon health promotion hospitals and local administrative offices.

This included hiring a national wheelchair basketball athlete and extending him financial support for training and international tournaments. Third, they employ the disabled under Section 35 of the Act by allocating them space to market their products in the company’s factories and offices.
