PARIS (Reuters) - The military campaign against Islamic State in Syria should be completed in February following the end of fighting against the militant group in Iraq, French President Emmanuel Macron said.

"On December 9, Iraqi Prime Minister (Haider al-) Abadi announced the end of the war and the victory over Daesh, and I think that by mid- to late February we will have won the war in Syria," Macron said in a broadcast interview, using the Arab acronym for Islamic State.

France would now push for peace talks involving all parties in the six-year-old Syrian conflict, including President Bashar al-Assad, Macron told France 2 televisions, promising "initiatives" early next year.

He did not say how any French proposals would relate to existing negotiations being brokered by the United Nations.

Despite being a leading backer of the Syrian opposition, France has sought a more pragmatic approach to the Syrian conflict since the arrival of President Emmanuel Macron, saying that the departure of al-Assad was not a pre-condition for talks.

Assad's government has been backed by Russia and Iran. President Vladimir Putin last week announced a significant scaling back of Russian forces in Syria, saying their mission was largely complete.

Quite ridiculous seeing Macron patting himself on the back. This dog and pony show must have an audience with the French electorate, but most observers realize that ISIS are not defeated at all, only the battle theater has changed from the deserts of the ME to the Christmas markets and high streets of European cities. And still, not single world leader(excepting Trump) has the testicular fortitude to tackle strict islam head-on.

Complete nonsensical comments regards Macron's foreign and domestic policies in the fight against Islamists. For a change look beyond parroting hard right memes. e.g....

Luckily we have Erdogan, who is the only world leader that speaks honestly about Islam. While Macron and his fellow European socialist leaders harp on about an end to ISIS and how wonderful our moderate islam is, Erdogan steps up to the plate and says "These descriptions are very ugly, it is offensive and an insult to our religion. There is no moderate or immoderate Islam. Islam is Islam and that’s it.

This is why in the west we will never defeat ISIS/strict Islamic ideologists. Because our leaders do not understand islam.

NB The Erdogan quote above is easily verified by a quick google. I refuse to post a link to this seeing as you will derail the thread by going on your far right source denigrations.

Yes, Erdogan said it. The question is, what does it mean? You seem to have missed the point there. But I'm not going to explain why. You'll just derail the conversion by invoking cliched denigrations of moderates and liberals.

If what Isis has done in Europe is your idea of war, then you've led a very, very, very sheltered life.

This is what a Christmas tree looks like in modern England thanks to the usual suspects. A Christmas tree! (source -the Telegraph)

The Islamic state is winning, and yes, it is most certainly a war.

Dedicated follower of BS. Wouldn't be surprised if a propagandist in IS incorporates your rubbish.

Oh...a few facts instead of your nonsense...

A council has admitted it was "over cautious" when it installed a widely-ridiculed cordon around a Christmas tree for public safety.

The Russians , Iraqi & Irani will have won , no French ! Macron can't even fight the war in his own country.

Incorrect. Whilst not to the same level as the Russians etc, French military forces have been operating in Syria and Iraq, including the deployment of 36 fighter bombers. Also French ground forces have been effective in operations against Islamists in Africa.

Domestically France has been rigorous by way of introducing additional anti islamist legislation and other actions, closing mosques hosting Islamist preachers, deportations, counter terror operations and so on. On the other side of the coin Western security agencies have warned it will be a long term effort to overcome Islamist threats on both the domestic and international fronts.

It's long overdue for a certain clique on TV to stop constantly posting misinformation  - check your facts before posting.

Listen. You should be fair to BuaBS. After all, it was those lying cowardly French who didn't believe George Bush's claims about Sadaam Hussein and weapons of mass destruction. And we know now how foolish their skepticism was. And in the fight against Islamists, out of all the western nations, France has only committed the second most troops after the USA , to the fight.

Anyway, I'm feeling a bit peckish now and am going off to eat some Freedom Fries.

Again : The Russians , Iraqi , Iranians and Assad's troops have won the war in Syria. The bombing by french planes is minmal .

I'm not talking about Africa . But since you went there : Because of the chaos the french and other nato countries caused in Libya , ISIS is there too , and all the african "refugees" coming through there to invade europe. But that of course was the previous french gov.
