Artiwara “Toon” Kongmalai continued his run in Phayao for the second day amid chilling weather of 9 degrees Celsius.

Toon, who reached Phayao on Friday, started his first leg of the run on Day 53 of his charity campaign run on Saturday at 3am.

He ran 22 kilometres from in front of Phayao University on the Phayao-Chiang Rai road.

Although the weather was cold, a lot of local people and students came out to cheer Toon on and hand him their cash. At some spots, people gathered around fires to wait for Toon.

Toon had to wear gloves to warm himself.

During the run, he encountered a 82-year-old woman, Sithong Lakthan, who was waiting the roadside. Toon stop to hold her hands and the old woman gave him some cash and northern food. She also gave him a kiss to provide moral support.

Before Toon reached the finish line of the first stage, he ran past a group of nursing students from Borom Ratchonnaee Nurse College who stood in rows of honour for him to go under. They gave him cash and sang him a song. Toon also joined in singing his own song, “The Last Light”, with the nurses.

He finished the first lap at the PTT petrol station in Tambon Ban Tom in Phayao’s Mueang district.

So far Toon has run for 41 days covering 2,075 kilometres. The donations he is raising for 11 major public hospitals have amounted to Bt966.729 million.

9  degrees is the near perfect temperature for distance running. Anyway, good luck to him, let's hope all that money goes to the right place, the sacks don't have 'holes' in them, and it helps the needy people it was originally intended for.
