GSB: 4.6% economic growth obtainable in 2018

BANGKOK, 3 January 2018 (NNT) – The Government Savings Banks (GSB) research center has forecast that Thailand's economy in 2018 would grow 4.6 percent, up by four percent from the previous year.

The President and Chief Executive Officer of the state-owned GSB, Chatchai Payuhanaveechai, said a full-year growth of 4.6 percent in 2018 is obtainable with the support from the export and service sectors. He added that the government's economic stimulus measures have also expanded domestic consumption and investment.

Other factors contributing to the country's economic growth include global trade and economic expansions, increases in government spending and investment, an increase in the private sector investment following the expansion of the export sector, the continuation of the government’s investment in infrastructure and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) upgrading projects and tourism growth.

The risk factors for the Thai economy in 2018 are:

the movement of capital and exchange rate that tends to fluctuate from the main economic and financial policies of the country,

the stability of agricultural sector,

the quality of household and SME business debt which is likely to deteriorate,

the clarity of the general election,

and the international political risks, including the North Korean Peninsula crisis and issues in the Middle East.

Top end of prediction range by a government-owned bank.

  • "the economy will probably expand 3.9 percent for the whole of 2017, and 3.6 percent to 4.6 percent next year [2018]"
  • "the GDP data showed “domestic demand might still be quite tepid” and investment showed “little sign of revival.”

Note possible lower growth rate for 2018.

Good news. The Thai bashers won't like it.

And the junta sycophants will swallow up the propaganda without question, as usual.
