Five hurt in crash of van carrying donated organs

Five people were injured when a van from Praram 9 Hospital carrying donated human organs crashed into the concrete base of a communication switching cabinet in Ayutthaya early on Wednesday.

 

Police said the accident happened at 4am in Tambon Sanab Tueb in Wang Noi district.

 

The van driver, Somboon Vattanakit, told police that a car cut in front of his van at a very close distance, so he swerved to the left and crashed into the concrete base on the roadside.

 

Somboon and four staff members of a medical team were injured. They were identified as Thawatchai Klinsukhon, Haruethai Sathanbua, Pussadee Wannarat and Sudarat Paengkaew.

 

The five were rushed to Wang Noi Hospital.

 

The team was taking donated organs from Chaiyaphum to Praram 9 Hospital when the accident occurred.

This is one of those times when a dash cam would be really handy.

 

Or maybe not so handy, depending on whether it tells the same story as the driver.

 

Even after death a person is not safe for the traffic in Thailand.   

 

I wonder if the organs made to their intended recipient(s).

The five people didn't know that they carried the donated organs inside themselves.

They stay fresher that way.

I never thought about it before but I suppose that this time of year and Songkran are the most beneficial if you happen to be on the organ donor register.

Besides  the injuries  it  is  actually a  sadder event if  the donated  organs  were  rendered unusable. Organ  donation in  Thailand  is culturally/ religiously  avoided  by  many  if  not  most despite a huge  demand  for  such  a  simple  and  yet  non blood  type  specific item  such as  cornea transplant.

Even if  a  donor  is  registered and  death  is deemed  by  trauma in an  accident and  no   autopsy  is carried   out,  family  take  possession , perform  rites and  cremate  without  consideration  of  donor  status as   very  often happens.

There is nothing in Buddhism, Thai or otherwise, that prevents or discourages organ donation

The  Ghost  factor unfortunately  over rides rationality.

Unfortunately brains not transplantable along with driving skills.
