Replacing desktop computer

Recommended Posts

My old desktop, whilst still reliable, has seen better days and I am thinking of replacing it.

I am not a 'gamer' and I do not use the PC to watch movies

Any suggestions for a suitable replacement in the B15-25,000 range if possible with a solid state drive (SSD), Windows 10 (or better) installed?

Given that you are not looking for a top end machine, any off the shelf PC will probably meet your needs. Maybe base your purchase more on a reputable shop, known brand, warranty etc.

Some extra RAM is usually a good investment. For basic use, Internet browsing, no multitasking, vanilla boot up etc, you may not see any great improvements with an SSD, and extra RAM sort of replaces the benefits of an SSD.

Sorry, but that is just nonsense.

My advice would be to just buy a PC without SSD and install your own SSD and OS(if necessary).

Genuine Windows 10 Pro can be obtained for 500 baht, 120 GB SSD from 1850 baht. 240 GB from  3000 baht.

So 3500 baht for a 240 GB SSD and Windows 10 Pro, leaves quite a bit in the budget.

Even the first machine on the list; https://www.jib.co.th/web/index.php/product/readProduct/27964/DESKTOP-PC--คอมพิวเตอร์ตั้งโต๊ะ--LENOVO-510-15IKL-90G800GATA  for 11,500 baht (12,000 baht with 2 hour delivery in Bangkok and surrounds) has ample spec.

Personally, I would seek out a machine that allows the fitting of the SSD alongside the existing storage. So that the SSD would be your boot and everyday drive and the 1 TB HDD for storage.

You can then choose whether to upgrade the existing Windows 10 Home to Pro.

So that is an example of everything the OP needs for 15k.

Not sure why thats nonsense, a basic machine doing basic stuff, isnt actually using or accessing the hardrive much. IF a machine has plenty of RAM, programs run in RAM, not using a page file to swap stuff from HD to RAM. You can browse the internet all day without the hardrive doing anything.

An SSD wont speed up the ops internet connection, network connection, copying files on or off the PC (USB or Network speed). It only speeds up reading and writing to the SSD and if the OP isnt doing any disk intensive activities, is saving documents to the cloud etc, probably wont notice.

If then OP wanted to defend the universe, render video, have 27 programs open and run a Media server then yes he would notice the benefits of an SSD.

Why are you wasting your time with this?

With the most basic usage, even with 8 GB of RAM, fitting an SSD will make the average PC noticeably snappier.

If a program is on the HDD, it will still have to load into memory. Windows updates and upgrades will be faster and less liable to failure etc

Because it makes a 20%-30% + increase in the price.

And that extra cost wont make browsing the internet, transferring files quicker.

Perhaps you can illustrate how this is so.

I have posted two projections at the low end of the budget. Perhaps you can post an example of a machines with comparable performance for 20% to 30% less.

OP, go for a DELL desktop. No need to buy a genuine W 10 Pro, as you can get it from Ebay for 300 baht, or slightly more.

DELL has a great customer sup[port, new machines come with an at least 3 year warranty.

   Please see: http://www.dell.com/th/p/desktops.aspx?c=th&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=mn

P.S. You don't really need an SSD, but if you can afford it, why not?

Total replacement--including the monitor?

No gaming, no vids, no compiling C# proggies, no 3D modeling--we talking a machine just for email, browsing, light office work? Don't need a lot of disk space?

You care if a shop like Jib assembles a custom build for you, or do you prefer a name brand?
