Thirty Thais stopped at airport from travelling to South Korea to work illegally

By The Nation

Thirty Thai men and women were stopped from leaving the kingdom on Monday night at Suvarnabhumi Airport after they admitted they intended to go to South Korea to work illegally.

Aroon Chaiyarn, chief of the airport's employment office, led Labour Ministry officials to intercept the group at the fourth floor of the departure terminal at 8.30pm.

The Thais, aged between 35 and 50 years old, were taken for questioning in response to a tip-off that the group intended to enter South Korea as tourists and go into hiding to illegally work there.

Initially, the Thais denied that they plan to work illegally in South Korea and said they simply wanted to visit the country as tourists. They said they had paid their tour firm between Bt20,000 and Bt40,000.

However, they admitted the illegal plan after Chaiyan showed them a chat log of their LINE group that he got from an informant that showed they were planning to work in South Korea.

Chaiyarn gave them a warning and sent them home without placing a charge.

Don't know who is more desperate - job seekers or the employers.

They get the really crap and dangerous jobs.  A nephew of an ex. paid 100K+ Baht to get a job in Korea.  Turned out to be a backyard leather tannery where toxic dyes were used in vats he had to empty by hand.  He worked there 2 years, got sick and came home.  He died two years later from kidney failure, not yet 25 years old.  Doctors said his internal organs were a wreck, more than likely from the toxic dyes.
