Retired engineer of Electricity Generation Authority of Thailand Mr Wattana Poomret was on Tuesday (Jan 23) sentenced to 26 years and six months after he was found guilty by the Criminal Court of detonating a bomb at a public telephone booth in front of the Royal Thai Army headquarter, causing serious injuries to two military personnel 11 years ago.

The court originally handed down life imprisonment on Wattana, 62? but commuted the sentence to 26 years and six months for his confession to the crime.

The two officers injured by shrapnel of the September 2007 explosion were Corporal Wicha Tarasunthorn and Senior Sgt-Maj Jiradet Atthapong.

Earlier on Dec 6, the EGAT’s retired engineer was handed down 27 years in prison for detonating a bomb hidden in a vase in front of a pharmaceutical unit of Phramongkutklao hospital, injuring 21 people, mostly retired army personnel.  The bombing incident took place on May 22 last year.
