National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) chairman Pol Gen Watcharapol Prasarnrajkit told reporters on Thursday (Jan 25) that he decided to stay away from the commission’s voting on Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon’s pricey wristwatch issue because he was close to him.

He said was close to Gen Prawit because he used to be his subordinate when he served as deputy secretary-general of the PM’s Office and, hence, his involvement in the voting of the controversial issue by the commission might taint the commission’s verdict on the matter. Therefore, quitting from the role was the right choice, he added.

Pol Gen Watcharapol informed members of the commission at a meeting on Jan 23 of his decision to stay away from the voting after the commission received the case file of the expensive wristwatch saga from the NACC’s probe team.

I can imagine that once he steps away the probe and the voting will be handled completely fair.

You know, integrity of the other NACC members and all...

Just amazing how long it took him to realize how close he was to him.

We can assume he didn’t investigate him properly during the period he was supposed to be investigating him. Thanks for your negligence and wasting everyone’s time. In any functioning government, you’d be under investigation yourself now.

"The NACC chairman asked the media not to quickly jump into conclusion that wristwatch probe would be a whitewash for Gen Prawit after the NACC secretary-general Worawit Sookboon said the deputy prime minister needs not have to declare to the NACC the wristwatches he borrowed from friends."

Setting new low standards.  Creating a whole new level for officials to participate in corruption.

Let's be clear about this - Watcharapol is the chairman of the National Anti-Corruption Commission of a major world nation, not some slimy bunch of wrongdoers. Why the hell has it taken this supposedly intelligent and ethical high official almost a month to come to this fundamental decision re closeness and resulting conflict of interests?

In many peoples' eyes, this delay is tantamount to him admitting that, had he not decided to quit, he'd have been likely to show favour in the NACC's final judgement . . . but now, at long last, this incorruptible and upstanding individual has seen the light. Why do Thais take so long to see these lights that officials and politicians in most western-style cultures, would see at a stroke; the snags and pitfalls and the 'closeness', for heaven's sake, would be excluded from further discussion within seconds.

The entire governance, legislative and regulatory machine, supposedly under the 2P's control, now appears to be tarnished from top to bottom. Let's hope the press give P1 some 'reasonable' questions on this and other conscience-pricking issues at next Monday's PR bash . . . if the real Prayut has the guts to turn up, that is.

OK, then, I will take my time in jumping to the conclusion that the wristwatch probe would be a whitewash for General Prawit.  There, I've done it and I have decided that it will be a whitewash on the grounds that he borrowed them all from friends, just like we all do.  They will expect us all to accept the verdict without hesitation or criticism because they are in charge and the rest of the Thai population are merely would-be voters in the election which is travelling at a hell of a pace along the road map into oblivion.
