Pattaya eyes resurrecting failed Koh Larn wind-power plant

KOH LARN:--The stingray-shaped “Ray Building” on Samae Beach was the final phase of a 170-million-baht foray into wind- and solar-power production that also was seen as a draw to tourists.

The pilot project produced electricity for Pattaya city offices and street lights on Koh Larn using 45 wind turbines. The Ray Building, completed in 2011, was an alternative-energy resource center – complete with solar panels – restaurant and souvenir stand.

The project created confusion with Koh Larn residents who thought the turbines were supposed to supply power to the entire island when, by design, the meager 200 kw they produced was only intended to power the city office and Koh Larn’s street lamps.

As with many projects launched by the former Pattaya mayor, however, no money was allocated for maintenance and the Ray Building and the alternative-energy experiment shut down in just a couple years.

Turning it into a waste recycling plant would be a much better idea....:whistling:

Just another project that was a waste of money ,for the taxpayers,

but I am sure others done alright out of it,just think how much better

Thailand would be if it was not for the waste of money by  Governments

past and present.

No sense in building or buying something and not maintaining it. Can you imagine buying a new car and never changing the engine or transmission oil - car would stop running in about 20K KM.

Standard Thai practice which is why farang cars keep their 2nd hand value.

Coming soon. Pattaya white elephant tours including coral island visit and waterfront grand finale.

Read about Ittipol below if you don't already know how much money the ex-Mayor wasted on useless projects.

Did any project under that man ever succeed- marina, car park, Waterfront?

Still, I guess the locals got the politician they deserved, for the usual reasons.

Seems there is more sun consistently than correct direction wind, maybe a few hundred more million for a solar panel area to power those all-important city offices and street lights.

170mil for 200kW, ~850,000 B/ kWh max I assume. Where can we tender for these projects?
