January 28, 20188 yr Been having an epedemic of Hatari fan capacitors dying on me lately. No problem with capacitors for years then three in the last couple of weeks. Most of of the fans are the regular 14in. and problem easily solve with capacitor replacement. 1.5uf 400v. Yeaterday one of my Accord 12in. fans stopped working, this has a 1uf. 350v. capacitor. I did'nt have the right value capacitor at hand so fitted one from my Hatari collection. 1.5uf 400v. It seemes to work OK, thought the fan speed seemed to be fluctuating but that could just have been my imagination. The fan worked fine for the rest of the day but when I came to turn it on this morning it would not work. At high speed the blades tried to turn slowly but that was all. So the would a difference of .5uf and 50v. prevent the fan from working?? So How critical are those capacitor values?????
January 28, 20188 yr Capacitor start motors can run inefficiently or even overheat from incorrectly sized capacitor. Always use the correct size and best quality capacitors especially for stuff that runs for long periods.
January 28, 20188 yr The voltage won't matter, particularly if it's higher. However as noted above, a 50% increase in capacitance could be bad news. I can't imagine it damaging the windings but you never know. Does the fan start if you spin it by hand? "I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"
January 29, 20188 yr Author Yep! the fan starts if i spin it by hand. Seems like 1uf capacitors are a rarety, took a trip to Amorn who had a good selection of capacitors but "no hab" 1uf. Don't know if they were out of stock or just don't carry them. Had a quick look at Lazada and RS Components web site but they din't seem to have them either. Bit supprised at RS Components, I thought they carried just about everything

But shops that sell water pumps, fans etc usually have spares? (Some even have a separate store for spares of that nature.) TV repair shops etc.?

Erm! that's a possibility - will keep that in mind as plan B Tried the spinning with the hand trick to get it going this morning but the little ****** would not start. Should have gone with plan B yesterday 21 hours ago, maxpower said: 2 x 2uf in series = 1uf Did'nt know that but seems you are right. Got a couple of 2uf lying around so will give that a go tomorrow. Tried the local TV repair shop as I got a capacitor from him some weeks ago but seems he has'nt restocked Hadn't concidered water pump shops, would have thought those kind of pumps would have much higher value capasitors, but worth a try. Cheers.

So to answer the origional question seems correct capacitor values are fairly important.
January 31, 20188 yr I wonder if it's actually the switch gone bad, even if you fried one of the windings it should still start with a spin. Does it buzz? "I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"
January 31, 20188 yr Author No it does't even buzz anymore There is power going to the switch and to the capacitor. Unlikely a faulty switch as it worked fine yesterday, when started to spin by hand, but who knows!!!! Will have a final go at it tomorrow before putting it in the spare parts corner, comes a point when it just ain't worth the effort
