Medical Check-Up

Featured Replies

Anyone had experience of a FULL medical check-up( ECG/CXR/Bloods/ MRI Body Scan etc) at a Private Hospital in Bangkok? Any to be recommended.? Rapidly approaching dotage and hoping to self refer but happy to get a Dr’s referral.

Most of the private hospitals offer a variety of "check up" packages. Unusual I would suspect to see a specific doctor for such a check but could be wrong.

May be worth asking a mod to move to the Health forum where you are more likely to get some specific responses?

I did a full check up at Samitivej late last year which was fine in itself (actually helped identify some issues requiring treatment) but I do recall discovering afterward that the equivalent package at St. Louis was significantly cheaper.

FWIW, I've ended up having my treatment done at Bangkok Hospital as I find the quality of doctors there is the best so I would recommend checking out their health check packages.

Most of the upscale hospitals offer checkups as various plans, typically from a fairly thorough one taking a half-day cost 3-4k baht, to a two-day super version with about every test imaginable for about 10k baht. Best to check out the top ones on their internet site, they will have full info. I suggest Bangkok Hospital, Bumrumgrad, etc.

This topic has been extensively covered in many opast threads and countless TV members have had check ups at various hospitals.

They all do the tests fine but quality of interpretation is variable and it can sometimes be overly cursory/boilkerplate. Samitivej in my experience does a good job of being thorough in interpretation specific to the individual's history. St Louis was OK and costs much less. but it will depend o nthe particular doctor who reviews the results, wherever you go.

In addition you need to do your homework first as to what tests are needed. Do not rely on the hospital to advise you and do not feel limited by the contents of the "packages", you can always add on additional tests and this may be less expensive than opting for a more costly package just because something you wanted is nto listed in the less costly ones.

Be warned that many of the items in the higher end packages are nto really recommended for screening purposes and apt to give a lot of false positives leading to additional unnecessary testing.

Sheryl...If you could design a reasonably priced check-up for a relatively healthy 60-70 year old, what would be your optimal test line-up be?

fasting glucose or Hb1AC

lipid panel: LDL, HDL and triglycerides

creatnine

BUN

AST, ALT

CBC

urinalysis

PSA if male

manual prostate exam if male

exercise stress test unless you have had one in past 2 years that was normal

colonoscopy if not done within past 10 years (does nto need to be done annually. Every 10 years if completely normal, every 5 years if just 1-2 low risk polyps found, more often per doctors advice if more than 2 polyps or any high risk polyps found or if other risk factors)

If you are or were a smoker other tests might be indicated
