Letter from Trump prompts African leaders to refrain from criticising him

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - African leaders say they have decided to refrain from issuing a resolution to criticise Donald Trump's alleged reference to their nations as "shithole countries" because the U.S. president sent them a letter expressing respect for the continent.

The leaders who met at an African Union summit in the Ethiopian capital were initially set to demand an apology from Trump over the remark reported by sources at a meeting on immigration with him this month. Trump denies making the comment.

Reports of the comment touched a nerve because they come on top of decisions by the Trump administration, particularly on visa restrictions, that many Africans say unfairly penalize the continent.

As the summit was being held at ministerial level, the gathering drafted a resolution calling on Trump to "publicly apologise to all Africans".

Anything short of that would force them to suspend a cooperation deal signed between Washington and the bloc, said the draft seen by Reuters.

African leaders are "dismayed and shocked by the increasingly consistent trend by the Trump Administration to denigrate of African descent ... thereby promoting racism, xenophobia and bigotry," it said.

But a Jan. 25 letter sent by Trump prompted a change of tack at presidential level.

One summit official said the final resolution that is yet to be released contains no reference to the issue after the leaders concluded the meeting late on Monday.

"I want to underscore that the United States deeply respects the people of Africa and my commitment to strong and respectful relationships with African states as sovereign states is firm," Trump said.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson would "travel to Africa for an extended visit," he said.

The AU Commission had "taken due note" of the letter, which wished the summit success, Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat said during the closing press conference.

Rwanda's President Paul Kagame, who met Trump last week on the sidelines of the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, said Trump's reported comment had no impact on the AU summit.

"When the United States decided to give us Trump as their president we deal with that president of the United States. It is not an issue of whether you appreciate him for this or for that, it is a job that he is doing for his country," added Kagame, who assumed the African Union's chairmanship this year.

He said both he and Trump had stressed the need for more cooperation.

What kind of a leader and president of a country refers to other nations as shithole countries?

Answer: A person with a diplomatic passport, that doesn´t know shit about diplomacy and diplomatic behaviour.

Answer: A person that speaks his mind and is truthful to those whom he does business. Unlike Democrats that lie out the side of their face and do nothing they promise.

having been asked to name just one African nation right away without thinking, Trump responded "Canada". Apparently, Tillerson is on his way there now...

What is glossed over by so many is the countries Trump referred to as "shit hole" countries are in fact shithole countries with rampant corruption government corruption floundering economies, and little rule of law. That is why all the citizens want to leave.  Of course, it was not politically correct to say and a diplomatically a blunder but it was

technically correct. Those countries are shitholes, I have been to some of them.

The living conditions in many countries are not of the same standard as the US, Canada, the EU etc.  Normally, a person such as a  President would recognize that his comments have ramifications beyond a normal person sitting at home or in a bar having a beer and a chat.

Not only is Trump arrogant and undiplomatic- he is rude and ignorant. Africa is a  continent of countries that house a huge amount of natural resources; an expanding middle class and a potential economic market for American goods and services.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had Trump pegged for what he really is-  "Trump is a freaking moron!"

Come on Trump fans, make your minds up.  Either he said it, and is therefore the brave new non-PC face of politics, telling it like it is, or he didn't, in which case his whole "tell it like it is" facade crumbles away to reveal a rotten little coward.  The one known fact in this story is that your golden boy sent a grovelling letter begging for a second chance.  Make America Grovel to Africa!

Why is it, whenever Trump is accused of saying or doing something bad/illegal, he inevitably and immediately says "Not true."  "Fake news."  ......EXCEPT if there is irrefutable audio or video proof of him saying/doing it.   .....even then, The Liar in Chief may try to deny it, as he's tried doing with the 'grab em by the pussy' tape.

It's obvious to every reasonable / knowledgeable person that Trump said that phrase several times.  Two of the attendees back it up.  The others at the meeting are self-admitted lap dogs who at first said they didn't recall it, and later contradicted themselves by saying it wasn't said.    Republicans are swirling round and round in brown toilet water (in Trump's gold plated toilet) - and are about to go down  tubes.

If you host a party, and someone shows up in a 2nd hand suit with his tie not tied correctly, are you going to call out to the other guests, "Hey everyone, look at this tramp. He can't even dress decently!"

Trump can say whatever he wants in private.  But in public, he's the president and should at least try to act presidential.  He's a dismal failure on so many levels, it's hard to keep up.

You mean like Trump's history of breaking contracts with contractors? Or his paying 25 million dollars to settle a civil fraud suit? In fact his business history is littered with broken promises.

Face it, all you Liberals. Trump won, you lost. You accused the Republicans of trying to torpedo all of Obama's plans. yet your whining and wailing tops anything the Repubs tried to do. They never said Obama was a mental case, should be impeached, was the worst example of a President in history. Did nor march in the streets, or riot. Shame on you. You are just crybabies who cannot accept that the path to socialism and utopia has been temporarily blocked.

I don't know where you have been the 8 years that Obama was in office.   Here's just a few of the daily barrage of mis-information:

He was born in Kenya

He was a Muslim

He was a member/sympathizer of the Black Pathers

Etc., etc., etc.,

Liberals are a bit pissed-off that two presidential elections in the past 16 years have been won by the candidate who got fewer votes.  But no liberals are saying Trump is not the president.  Imagine how right wingers would react if Hillary had 3 million fewer votes than Trump, but became president due to the Electoral College.   Heck, Trump was shouting 'rigged election' every day for weeks - prior to the election.  Was he looking in a mirror, while shouting that?

The reason a vast majority of Americans liked Obama as president, is because he had character qualities and was a good president.  The reason most American detest Trump is because he does/says detestable things (many of which are harmful to the USA) each day.  Is that clear enough?
