Beach smoking D-day: Ban will be extended in Pattaya but no one mentions jail terms

A huge meeting of state employees attended by 878 delegates from 11 provinces was held yesterday at the Ambassador City Hotel in Jomtien, Pattaya, to hear environmental authorities give the reasoning behind the beach smoking ban.

Following the meeting it was announced that the ban will be extended to other beaches in Pattaya after the trial at Dong Tan. But so far it is unsure where smokers will be forbidden from lighting up.

The D-Day for the ban at 24 of Thailand's beaches finally arrived yesterday.

To mark the occasion the gathering at the Ambassador was addressed by Jatuporn Burutpat of the department of marine and coastal resources who were behind the beach smoking ban after conducting environmental damage surveys last year.

Jatuporn said he was satisfied with the PR campaigns, signage and cooperation received in the department's endeavors to save Thailand's beaches and keep them clean.

Following the meeting director of the department's Chonburi branch Thanet Mannoi led a delegation to Dong Tan beach to see how things were progressing. Dong Tan is the only beach at present where smoking is forbidden in Pattaya.

Thanet said that he was happy that operators and Thai and foreign tourists were all cooperating and understood the importance of the initiative, reported Sophon Cable TV on Facebook.

He also said that the ban would soon be extended to other beaches in Pattaya but would not be drawn just yet on where and when exactly.

Sophon made no mention of the burning question on many lips as D-Day arrived - would anyone be fined 100,000 baht or even jailed for smoking on the beach?

These are the maximum penalties available for contravening environmental ordinances.

Cigarette buts are unsightly for sure...the smoke is not nice to breath 2nd hand....but, the raw sewage (and untold tons of litter) flowing into most beaches, is thousands of times more harmful to everyone!

But let's not bother about that, as this smoking ban will take interest away from sewage and increase revenue from the silly tourists.

they won't be throwing people in jail for this. just to mention this is a law for everyone not just foreign tourists. just don't smoke at those beaches. simple

I can see a few people getting the maximum fines in the next few days, ....... that pissup meeting for 878 people has to be paid for some how!!!
