WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. White House staff secretary Rob Porter said on Wednesday he would resign following accusations of domestic abuse from two former wives.

He did not say when his resignation would be effective.

Porter, a senior adviser who is in charge of much of the documentation that goes to President Donald Trump for his signature, announced his resignation in a statement after his former wives made accusations against him in published reports.

DailyMail.com quoted Colbie Holderness as saying that Porter choked and punched her during their marriage. Intercept.com quoted former wife Jennifer Willoughby as saying that Porter was abusive. Reuters has not independently confirmed the claims.

“These outrageous allegations are simply false," Porter said in a statement released by the White House. "I have been transparent and truthful about these vile claims, but I will not further engage publicly with a coordinated smear campaign."

Porter said he would "seek to ensure a smooth transition when I leave the White House.”

The accusations against Porter were a surprise to many at the White House, who have seen the lanky aide as a mild-mannered, easy-going adviser.

Porter had not yet been approved for a security clearance. White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said issues related to an individual's suitability are reviewed through a thorough and lengthy background check process.

"Background checks involve a complex investigation run by intelligence and law enforcement agencies. As has always been our policy, we do not comment on security clearances. Rob Porter has been effective in his role as Staff Secretary. The President and Chief of Staff (John Kelly) have full confidence in his abilities and his performance," she said.

Another man falls to "accusations".

As long as prominent men keep taking the easy way out, the usual suspects will keep attacking every man that is politically vulnerable.

Wake up men, we are all under attack, guilty or not- it doesn't matter to them.

IMO, the useful fools ( men that have jumped on the bandwagon to attack their own gender ) will themselves be doomed once they have won.

One of his wive's had filed for an immediate protective order on him, so I don't think this is a smear campaign.

Filing doesn't mean doodly squat if it's just a legal move to try and build a case against him.

If the guy is convicted in a court I'll accept he's not just being fitted up. Innocent till proven and all that, which people seem to think is not applicable anymore.

Does seem though, that either his second wife didn't do due diligence on the reason for his first divorce, or he is attracted to the wrong sort of woman.

Well, I am not surprised you don't believe it, but this isn't a case of someone reporting something many years later.   It was reported to the police right away.

Porter started right at the beginning of the current administration yet he could not get a security clearance for over a year? Does this not raise any flags? Jared Kushner can't get security clearance too. What is it with WH staff unable to get security clearance? Does this not concern anyone?

John Kelly's continued endorsement of Porter even after these multiple statements of abuse is incredulous. Kelly continues to show his 1950's attitude towards women. He is the Archie Bunker of the WH. The WH is full of misogynistic men so it isn't surprising to see such abuses come to light and the subsequent downplaying thereof.

Oh, and here is a picture of the abuse "accusation".

Looks like assault to me, so why wasn't he charged and out on bail while waiting for a court prosecution?

The amazing thing is: it was the "abuser" who took this photo himself years and years ago!!!  wot the flock???

What would be the point of taking a photo of a black eye he himself had caused?  Maybe he's a devout Catholic who believes in confession and self-flagellation...

Abuse can happen without there being a subsequent formal report to police.

Why would a woman falsely accuse a man of something like that?  If so, it's probably a very rare event.

Similarly, over a dozen women have accused Trump of sexual assault - by a man who admits he sexually assaults women.  Trump shielders are going to say, "yea ok, if those stories are true, then where are each of the formal police reports which were required to be filed right after the supposed attacks happened?"

Human nature doesn't act like calculators.  If you have a 6 year old child, and she comes back from playing after school and says a boy threw sand in her face, .....are you going to say, "where's your proof?  Did you immediately go to school authorities and file a report?  Where's the video?  I don't believe you if there's no solid proof."

For millenia, women have suffered from male-dominated scenarios.  Women have not been believed - as often as mens' insipid excuses/denials have been tolerated.   Things are changing for the better nowadays.

"Why would a woman falsely accuse a man of something like that?"

Why would a woman falsely accuse a man of rape, assault, etc etc - I don't know the answer and the probability is there is more than one answer. But there are plenty of cases where women have been shown to falsely accuse men.

Just as some men do regularly assault their wives and get away with it for years and years.

My point, about false accusations, is not that they never happen - but rather, they're very rare.
