The National Police’s annual report has accused neighbouring countries of abusing Cambodia’s borders over the past year through air space incursions, the construction of barbed wire fences, farmland encroachment and road clearance work. The report said that in 2017 the security situation along borders was quiet, but also noted 388 irregular activities, including 365 along the border with Thailand, 15 with Vietnam and eight with Laos.

The incidents included entering Cambodia’s airspace, deploying barbed wire, encroaching on farmland and road clearing work, the report said. General Kirth Chantharith, National Police spokesman, said the airspace abuses committed by Thailand were often the use of drones flying into Cambodian airspace on border reconnaissance missions.

“The problem is that they fly drones into our airspace,” he said, adding that Thailand also deployed barbed wire that encroached on Cambodia’s border. Last year, Prime Minister Hun Sen ordered thousands of troops to be deployed along the border with Laos following an incursion by Lao soldiers and a dispute over road construction.
