BANGKOK — Junta leader Prayuth Chan-ocha said Thursday that he’s been inspired by the doctrine of US President Donald Trump to put “Thailand First” when it comes to deciding when elections will take place.

Speaking to reporters at the Government House, Gen. Prayuth said a ranking American military official did not raise the question of elections in a meeting yesterday because the United States is “not worried” about whether Thailand holds them or not.

  • So the PM has been inspired by the US doctrine which has seen the US lose its position, reputation, influence, friends and allies around the world and has seen the US been roundly defeated at the UN.

  • Is not holding elections putting Thailand first or is it putting the Junta first?

  • Prayut says he has to 'take care of his people' - right! 'His' people are the less than 1% at the top of the pyramid of power who dominate and enslave the other 99%.   And note the utter bar

Prayut may be taking inspiration from Trump in his lying and regular change of stance on things too. Thailand first? More like me and my ring of cronies first and everyone outside doesn't matter!

And note the utter bare-faced shamelessness of the guy when he says that to get to 'democracy' in Thailand, people must 'follow my way, and the law's way'. Well, seeing as he IS the law - seeing as he is a military d .., di...  dinosaur of the worst kind - he is saying simply that it is 'my way or the highway'. Period.

So the PM has been inspired by the US doctrine which has seen the US lose its position, reputation, influence, friends and allies around the world and has seen the US been roundly defeated at the UN. And this is the policy you want to follow?

And Mr PM just because a US general didn't mention the elections, that does not mean the US is not interested in elections. It means a US general, being a general is a military man and he sticks to being a military man..not a politician so he leaves such questions to ...yep politicians (like the one with the funny hair you promised an election to on your one and only visit) .

You should not judge the officers and armies of the world by the same shoddy yard stick you use to judge and justify the actions of your army and its officers.

He is following the doctrine of picking from the worse.

It's possible that the American military are not interested in Thai politics and leave such discussion topics to their state department.

All of these stories about the PM's words, road maps, organic laws, etc, it feels like the people in power now think they can build it up until they finally say, "We decided no elections now at all. It's for the best for everyone". I believe they're so deluded they think they can get away with it.

I can't see how any of this is going towards the PM ever naming a definite date.

Pretty sure he will be claiming thailand his forever fairly soon now.

Geezzz he is acting as if he needs permission. Fact is he don't wanna let go of da bone!

Unfortunately they are getting away with it.

Trump acts quickly without warning, just ask  S. Korea and China about the tariffs he imposed on them 2 weeks ago.

He could revoke Thailand's favored  trade status at any time especially considering he does not like large trading deficits which it has with the US. As well as the fact US goods face high import taxes.

Pretty much the same as every other government in the world - unfortunately!

When will people see past the "illusion" of politics and actually having a choice is never going to happen under the current systems!

Prayut is barefaced the way he goes about his business, he knows he will get away with it, what are the great bastions of "democracy" saying?

Nothing as usual!

Although I strongly believe in democracy in spite of it's recent global decay into doing little but providing spineless lackeys for corporate greed heads.

I say again, where Thailand is concerned who do they have to choose from uniforms or suites are there any real leaders in this country who at least show some interest in the things other than lining their own pockets.

What exactly do you call universal healthcare, micro-loans for the poor, raising minimum wages and investing in rural infrastructure?

Democracy bought all of the above to Thailand.

Worthy examples for sure, still I have my opinion of the so called leaders of the countries of the world Thailand included and my opinion is low.

Cynics are only idealists with unrealistically high standards....there is hope for you yet.

wow, what a whopper, the toilet wouldnt hold this one;

guess i must have missed it; this prayut guy is the thai ambassador in the usa

Does the media even know how Thailand and the US are different?

One has an elected lunatic at the helm, the other is non elected

Photo suggests that someone is getting a real b>llocking as look how low he is holding his head. You really do not know how good it feels not to have to worry about a nutters next move?

I reckon General Prayuth is correct in his opinion since everything is moving along tickey boo. Co-operation with Cobra Gold one example.

Thank you Khun Prayut.  Keep pushing for economic stability with projects being implemented, also keep assisting the poor & farmers in rural villages.

More like: Keep seeking the public approval of foreigners to justify your actions and position to your people.
