sbk: separate physically; or train in tandem. its great fun to work a team but do u have the time for all this????!!!!!!!

so if u have time... go for it in a group (they will learn to respond if u use a name plus command for one -- have the others sit/stay or down/stay while u do something short and fun with one. then put him/her in the down/stay and call a different dog. in the beginning u might need a second pair of hands to correct one that starts to get up when not called which is why the down is better. u can see when they plan to get up and correct before they even get there front legs all the way up . nala sit/stay, nero come... that sort of thing.

try with teams of two first. not all dogs will work with each other. and, like horse teams, some dogs have preferences like always being on the left, etc. for heeling and stuff. nero and nala always heeled with nero against my leg. for going left, i would verbally tell them, 'left'. they worked in tandem (two dogs on one lead) and separately but together. it was very time consuming but certainly impressed the kibbutznikim whose dogs are always roaming loose. i could send one to bring a pine cone, one would 'wait'. etc. BUT FIRST, each dog really has to have some basics plus 'pay attention' to you. i think i have something somewhere about 'attention' training that might help u if i find it i will pm it. (its from the internet). its what i teach children to do with their dogs first. working dogs seem to have this 'paying attention to the handler' thing sort of bred in a bit more, as one of the traits breeders look for, as nero had it very developed. he always watched me for his cues. his attention never wandered.

sbk, just make sure u give them the treat when they get up and out of the room and show regular behavior (i.e. not shivering cowering ). the treat is for 'good' behavior, not as a reward for being scared. its just that with anticipation of the reward, they will get up and out faster each time (i would expect)which shortens their stress time. which is why i suggested a game also. a moving playing dog is less stressed, the movement relaxes them just like sports relax us.

november, here i dont know if u can remodify this behavior; some people might suggest prozac for a bit or other dog oriented anti depressant (i kid u not).. u might ask bambina since the dog is injured and stressed, behavior patterns are different and then again it might be medical or neurological. the other thing is, can u put a friend in with her? or place her near someone (visual or scent ) that she feels good with, dog wise? like an other dog that is laid back and could be with her? or leave a radio or tv going ? some dogs suffer from 'fear of abandonment' which is a sort of 'mental disease' so maybe these ideas help u will soothe her. the fact that she doesnt let u touch her doesnt mean that she cant tolerate u near her. for some dogs, closeness but no contact is enough. some dogs hate contact. but they like the nearness of someone/thing familiar. how about a shirt with your sweaty smell on it? or cover her crate if its open wire (give her the den feeling at night); or conversely, put her in an open wire crate if she's in a closed crate? macb, what say u???

paul: thast great: now try saying waan suuk! :D)

macb, will remember that one for here ( a neighbors' problem dog).

beautiful dogs btw.

now if i could just behavior modify my new boss.......... :o

Thanks for tips, bina. She is in view of other caged dogs at night (2 pups & a grown dog) but they're not her pack & I think she's as scared of them as of everything else in her present situation. I'll try covering the cage, as it fits in with another idea I had that she might be cold, so I'll put a quilt as bedding tonight too & see if that makes a difference. I'll report back tomorrow. Thanks! :o

Dont think I can add anything to binas comments there;

Dogs do learn from each other we used to run a young dog along side an older already wise dog and the younger one would learn as well.

As Bina says put two in the down while you train another, then swap over all good fun.

What I want to do now is put some tips up on heel work;

1st lesson in obedience 'Walking to Heel

Assuming you have got the right check chain and lead and play article I prefer a rag for tug of war in your left pocket. (The reason I use the rag is it keeps the dog with you while training)

Your dog will always be on your left side with the lead in your right hand Why the right hand because your left hand is for praising your dog.

So you got the dog on the left side place him/her in the sit if you do not have this then as you say the command sit slide your hand down the dogs back to the rump at the same time raising the lead above the dogs head, so the lead encourages the head up and the hand encourages the rump to the sit, important praise.

Now Now the dog is in the sit.

When you move off you will use the command HEEL, lead with you left leg and a little pursuasion with the lead to keep the dog next to your left knee at the same time praising with your left, only walk in a straight line at the moment put stops in saying Sit then praise, dont bore the dog. Little and often. At the end of the excercise over exagerate getting the rag out your pocket and play tug of war. If your dog will not play tug of war try tit bits this is the Shutzan method of training, or a ball (A ball is okay if your dog comes back with it)

Well thats a start :

Next installment lefts and rights, if you not sure ask.

If your not sure about how the dog should wear the chain, once you have threaded the chain through itself you want the loop hanging down towards the ground so that as you check your dog the ring slides up and down the chain.

hi november rain, i don't know if it's feasable for you but if i had a dog which howls at night i just put it in my bedroom. even if it's shy it will be ok with you near. just a thought to keep the neighbours happy... as you will release the dog again i can understand if you don't want to get to close to it or maybe it does not go well with the other dogs in your house. my last addition, bogart a 2 yr old golden howled like a deer at night when outside the first nights so i put him in my bedroom and he was the happiest dog and no howlning anymore. but he is really fond of people. now since long he is fine in the living room :o

Not enough room, elfe. 11 in there already, 9 on the bed and 2 in cages. I can't even swap her with one of the ones in cages as she won't let me move her. Good idea, though.

wow 9 on the bed wonderful :o here at the mo about 12 on the bed, cold season so most of them stay on the warm bed until it gets hotter and most move under or next to the bed when we sleep :D

One is paraplegic & the other got mild retardation after being extremely sick with blood parasites. She lives in the house, but will only sleep in the cage where she was nursed back to health. Guess it makes her feel secure. :o

mac, i'm wondering if the regular training tips should maybe be a separate thread?? one for the problems/suggestions and one for straight forward training programs... the thread is going to get awful long like someone's rain thread last year...

what on earth does a deer sound like when it howls???? .... thats a new one on me for sure.. :o.

so many dogs in the house!!! so i see that anon's idea of taking my two bottle kids (goat) home to sleep with us isnt too bizarre?? (in the end set up an infra red lite in stall and just go and feed at nite... pain in the neck but cant have little goats hopping around the house.

sorry i'm not familiar with the correct phrase in english :D , just looked up my dictionary, maybe 'bell like a moose' is more appropriate? don't know... but the sounds were really loud and deep voice and loooooooong :D

goat babies in the house - cute! :D wonder how they would get along with dogs :o

Thank you, bina. Quiet night last night. Tried a quilt folded into 4 under her & a blanket covering three sides of the cage. Not sure whether it was the warmth or the security she was craving, but not a peep! This is right, isn't it, macb? Positive results in red?

GOOD GOING NOVEMBER!!!!...

POSTITIVE REINFORCEMENT IN ORANGE!!!

goats and dogs?? depends on the dog/breed/what the dog is used to doing.

1. What sex are your dogs which one was on the scene first: This is a mothering from your dog:

2. Who normally exercises the dogs is it you or your husband : look at what your husband does when he runs the dogs then look at what you do: Change your routine with the dogs, make them sit first and wait till you are ready. Do they bark when you touch a certain item i.e. there leads ? Does the barking start in the house, if so change your routine open the door let them out first: They are excited, but are ruling you so change it make them wait for you you become the pack leader and they will respect you

How old is each dog? When did this licking behavior start?

I would train them to obey immediately to a sit and stay command. This outside the walkie times.

Once they do this, then ask them to sit-stay (quietly) and pick up a lead (that you have nearby). With the first the best sound they make or coming out the sit-stay, you put down the lead immediately and quietly and walk away. No walkie.

In other words, when they make a sound all action stops and there will be no walkie. When they sit nice and quiet when you put on their leads you praise them in a soft voice and then reward them for this good behavior with a nice stroll outside.

No need to correct or punish. The only thing you need, and that isn't easy (for many people), is persistence and consistence.
