The blaze broke out at the Sen Monorom Market in the provincial town at 2:20 a.m. local time and firefighters had taken several hours to control the flames.

"Two people, a 24-year-old man and a 13-year-old boy, were confirmed dead in the fire, as three others sustained injuries," Major General Ouk Samnang, police chief of Mondulkiri province, was quoted as saying by the National Police website.
