Super-tiny bugs in kitchen?

Greetings,

They could be drain flies!

Tiny little (very annoying) flies that you just can't get rid of no matter what ?

A few years ago I lived in a house and never had a problem with those things. Then I moved to a different house, on the other side of the soi and 4 down. Have had those little buggers since day 1 and I can't get rid of them ! Not sure what the difference is between the 2 houses (all of 30 meters apart). I've used drain cleaner and bleach and cases of bug sprays and within a couple days they are back again.

I thought they were some kind of fruit fly at first but I keep the house clean and there's no open garbage (or fruit) anywhere. They seem to be able to live on thin air as I will go away for 5+ days and within a day of getting back I see them all over (in the kitchen, bathroom and my "den" next to the bathroom).

I also had a problem with centipedes in the bathroom. I think they were coming in through cracks/missing hunks in the grout at the bottom of the walls. I got some sealer paste and covered most of the cracks and that seems to have gotten rid of almost all the centipedes and (possibly) a lot of the flies. I may have to do a little more sealing as I think there's a couple more spots where the grout has cracked and is coming out from between the tiles.
Could be that the flies are coming out of the same place as the centipedes. The places where the walls join and where the pipes go through is probably one big damp breeding ground for all those critters.

Hey Taffygrll,

I had the same problem at my home. After some research, I found them to be mold mites, not ants or fruit flies. These guys are tough, extremely resistant, and had to clean my countertops at least twice per day with white vinegar and hot water. I even used Mr. Muscle once in a while. You will need to check under your countertop and inspect the wood cabinet areas as well.

Good luck!

Get a can of Chaindrite and spray every surface, nook and cranny, .  Use a paper mouth/nose mask when spraying. Close the house up for 3 hours.

When you return, open up the house including windows to air out,   wipe the bench tops with warm soapy water to remove any residue.

All bugs will be dead.

What many of you are recommending is highly negligent and dangerous.
None of the insect sprays for general consumer use should ever be sprayed or used near or on surfaces that are in contact with food!!!

Chaindrite is for outdoor use only.

If you don't believe just read the labels when they are translated or search on Google about products with the same name or chemical ingredients.

This is a Drain Fly and as you can see they are covered in hairs, even the wings. This makes them very buoyant and resistant to sprays because air gets trapped between the hairs. The real test for Drain Flies is keep all flat areas free from water. In the kitchen (area) be sure that sinks are dry as well as the floor after cleaning. In the bathroom/shower/toilet after a shower etc. use a rubber squeegee to clear most of the water as they will lay eggs in very moist surroundings. The eggs hatch within 48 hours. I had problems but after doing the above (in the shower) now only get an odd one close to the drain.
