PHUKET:-- Environmental officials today advised tourists to not enter the water within 300 metres of the Pak Bang Canal at the southern end of Patong Beach due to contaminants in the water from untreated wasterwater flowing into Patong Bay.

The warning comes six days after it was discovered that raw sewage has been flowing untreated into water at the popular tourist beach, potentially exposing thousands of visitors to the island to health risks.

Asked how people would know whether the water is safe to enter, Khanchit Soontrakorn of the Regional Environment Department Region 15 office, based in Phuket, today told The Phuket News, “Right now, people are able to decide by the colour of the water.”

From the Phuket News article:

Meanwhile, Patong Municipality has reported that it has “solved” the problem of the sands at nearby Tri Trang Beach turning black from the volume of contaminants washed ashore.

The simple solution was to drive backhoes onto the beach and bury the black sand under cleaner, light-brown sand.

Incredible!

it really is disgusting. Even on the edge of Karon beach you can see where sewage probably comes out.  Are there any proper sewage plants on Phuket anywhere?  And even if they are, are the majority of the hotels big and small hooked up to them?  Boy, what a way to ruin a jewel of an island.  I went there a few times mainly to swim since Pattaya and Jomtien are so bad.
