Work begins on world’s longest krama

Featured Replies

A campaign to weave a 1,000-metre Khmer krama for a Guinness World Record attempt began yesterday near the Royal Palace. Sann Vathana of GoGo Cambodia, who launched the campaign, said that the creation of the world’s longest krama, a traditional Cambodian scarf, was to encourage Cambodians to continue to love, use and weave kramas in order to preserve Khmer culture, traditions and heritage.

The campaign includes about 20 krama weaving communities across the country and is an open opportunity for all citizens to join the weaving and contribute to the ownership of the longest krama in the world. “This event is for Khmer people to unite and join from all circles to weave the longest krama, a source of pride for the whole nation that will be a world record,” said Mr Vathana.

“Another purpose of the campaign is to make Cambodians look beyond the weaving,” he added. “It is to make them believe that Khmers can do anything.” Thai Norak Satya, spokesman for the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, said the campaign to weave the longest krama would inspire and unite Cambodians.

I believe they still hold the killing fields record.
