NACC to probe police station land encroachment case

THE ROYAL Thai Police has forwarded a land encroachment case involving its police station on Lipe island in Satun province to the National Anti-Corruption Commission after learning that retired officials were involved in land deed forgery.

Pol Gen Weerachai Songmetta, the RTP’s spokesman, said the NACC is expected to deliberate on the case and this will hopefully lead to the revocation of all concerned land deeds.

In 1988, the RTP asked the Royal Forest Department for about 18 rai of land to build the police station, but almost all of the land was encraoched upon by a resort. So far, the police station has half a rai left.

Weerachai said that police have found that the land occupation claim document was unlawfully issued. The same document was also used to endorse an additional 34 rai of land.

Six retired officials, including land officials in the province, were involved in the land deed forgery, authorities say.

Classic example of land-encroachment in a Thai National-Park ! :saai:

" Ko Lipe was one of the most beautiful islands in entire Thailand but due to unregulated development nearly 90% of the beaches are currently occupied by long-tail boats and the whole Island seems to be a constuction site. Like else where in the country, resorts built on the beaches. Another lost paradise with other words. "

according to the TDRI (Thailand Development Research Institute) :

"The TDRI findings echo a January survey by the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, which found that politicians are the major players in corruption, followed by state officials and then private firms. Together they create a vicious cycle, drawing others in. Our culture of corruption is now deeply rooted in both government agencies and local administrations."

so , assuming they are competent, the NACC has the easiest and toughest job in thailand:

easiest as corruption is everywhere; toughest as in 'where to start'

Ne interesting to know if NACC probes have actually resulted in convictions & actual punishment. They always seem to on some probe but never hear about the end result.

In many countries, that would come as a surprise. If the junta and the BiB can right this wrong, they deserve a lolly or a cookie and a pat on the back.
