Electronic ankle bracelets to be tried from March 1

The Thai Court of Justice on Tuesday unveiled Electronic Monitoring (EM) devices to be attached to the ankles of people released temporarily from custody.

 

A pilot project for use by 23 courts, replacing the bail system, begins on Thursday (March 1).

 

The aim is to prevent suspects jumping bail and the incarceration of people who cannot afford to post bail.

 

The project addresses issues of social inequity and jail overcrowding.

 

The Court of Justice has established an Electronic Monitoring Centre at Bangkok’s Ratchadapisek Criminal Court.

 

Operating around the clock, it will monitor suspects wearing EM devices and limit their travel range.

Way to go, Thailand!  Welcome to the 21st Century.  Of course, most modern and developed countries like the U.S., England, France, Germany, Austria, Australia, just to name a few, have been using these wondrous devices for over 15 - 20 years now. 

Yes, and if one of these devices were by chance - a chance of once in a blue moon - put on a big-shot 'hi-so' person like Prawit (as if!)  - then the device would be found mysteriously to malfunction. 'Oh, what a pity - the machine went wrong - and we don't know where Mr. Hi-So Guy now is. Mai pen rai!'

Will it be on a par with satellite TV here - doesn't work during heavy rain?

No doubt they'll be a specific colour to match your political persuasion.

Any colour you want as long as it's red

I'm guessing its to keep track of all the transferred policemen and officials !

But these most modern and developed countries still havent discovered the toilet spray gun!

In another article about the same subject 5,000 of these have been purchased by the Thai authorities at a cost of 80 million baht = 16,000b each.

The exact same electronic bracelet is advertised on the web by an American company at 190 USD = (around) 5,900b each

The American company is offering free shipping anywhere in the world...and no doubt a purchase of 5,000 would reduce the 190 USD listed price considerably......

 

Oh hang on...I just remembered... this is Thailand...Now where is the number one corruption fighter when you need him
