The mistake here, however, is the Democrats', and Janet Yellen in particular, Bessent's predecessor. Yellen could have issued debt when interest rates where at their all time lowest, but she missed that golden opportunity, which is widely regarded as the biggest blunder by any Treasury Secretary. Trump's team now has to fix this, and it's not easy, nor for free, obviously.
