Five Thai tourists who climbed on the ruins at Wat Mahathat in Ayutthaya were on Wednesday fined 5,000 baht each by Ayutthaya District Court.

The tourists who included two women and three men were charged with violating the law on archaeological sites and museums.  They pleaded guilty, claiming that they had no intention whatsoever to show disrespect to the historical site.

They were identified as Ms Lalinthip sae Ngow, Ms Viyanee Artharn, Bovorn Yupitak, Pornthep Wongchuen and Yutiwich Panthongprasert. Earlier in the morning before the court session, the five went to see the director of Ayutthaya historical park asking for his permission to pray to ask for forgiveness in Wat Mahathat.

They are Thai right? So why call them tourists now?

If a foreign tourist did this the fine would be 10foulded at least.

‘Gang of sinners’ fined Bt5,000 for temple photos

By The Nation

Five Thai tourists who dubbed themselves “gang of sinners 2018” in a hashtag linked to photos showing them standing on temples in Ayutthaya have been fined Bt5,000 each.

Salilthip Sae-ngow, 30, Wiyanee Art-hanm 31, Yutiwich Panthongprasert, 27, Pornthep Wongcheun, 27, and Boworn Yupitak, 34, also performed a ritual “to make amends to the spirits” of Wat Mahathat on Wednesday morning before they went to the Phra Nakhon Sri Ayutthaya Police Station.

Police took them to the provincial court in the afternoon to hear the ruling on charges of climbing on an historical structure resulting in damage and committing an “abhorrent act” at an historic site.

They pleaded guilty but claimed their actions stemmed from “ignorance of the consequences”, with the court judge sentencing them to the fine.

The five tourists had posed for photos while standing on top of temple platforms during their January 28 visit to Wat Mahathat in the Ayutthaya Historical Park.

After the photos were posted online, park director Sukanya Bua-nerd filed a police complaint on Monday against them.

At least they did not drop their trousers.Brainless even so a lot of damage could have been done.

Well you live and learn and I never thought I'd say this but fair play to the Thai courts and the judge. Same fine as 'those damn foreigners' got. No discrimination. Hopefully this might start a trend.

They should know better !!!!!!!!

I just love the  'wouldn't have done it if we had known the consequences' bit.

And what back country village did these 5 Thai tourists come from. One that does not even have a temple I would assume.

Geezer

No brains in the picture , what did they expect  ? A warm welcome?  Maybe they are kids from Bangkok hi-so families so can afford any fines .
