DNP: Wild tiger population in Thailand increases

Thailand has been successful in its effort to increase wild tiger population, especially in Huay Kha Khang wildlife sanctuary, the National Parks, Wildlife and Plants Conservation Department (DNP) deputy director-general Pinsak Suraswadi, said on Saturday (March 3).

Disclosure of the increasing tigers living in the wild was made as the country joined the world to mark the UN World Wildlife Day, which falls on March 3.

This year, the World Wildlife Day is celebrated under the theme “Big cats: predators under threat” to raise public awareness on the shrinking big cats population.

Sounds like an advert for rich industrialists to head off to the forests with their rifles....mind you, note the absence of black panthers in the pics. :shock1:

On a more serious note, Thai wildlife rangers should be congratulated for doing their bit to make this happen, as across the rest of the region, tigers are either extinct (Cambodia) or down to pitifully low numbers (Laos, Vietnam and Burma). Hope the upward trend continues in Thai NP's. :clap2:

Mr Pinsak said there are 49 tiger farms in the country with 1,464 tigers in captivity.

Most of those farms are operated by cheetahs.

like like..

Let Premchai go and he'll single handedly reduce those numbers on his next trip out with the lads.

I have to apologise for my cynicism, I just cant help thinking how similar this story is to those stories of the honest cabbies who return large amounts of cash left in their cabs only days after a story of a cab driver stealing from or assaulting a passenger.

Hiso kills a large wild cat = Tigers are doing fine?

That's just me, hope it's true.

Ah, so Premchai was just doing his bit to cull the over population. I get it.

Given the bad behavior from a badly behaved tycoon,  it is sorely needed good news from Thailand for the world .

Well after seeing that news Premchai will surely be purring.:cheesy:

I am sure that there is also a  very wealthy family member, Plodprasop Suraswadi, aka "Propeller Man"formerly in the TRT party, that operated the Night Safari in Chiang Mai, offering a buffet of exotic animals.

http://wildlife1.org/chiang-mai-night-safari-rare-animals-on-the-menu-at-zoo-visitors-offered-daily-buffet-of-lion-tiger-elephant-and-giraffe-meat-section/

Only in sanctuaries that are the private hunting grounds of the rich and connected.   How about the blank panther population?

As if, in country where encroahment is rife and is a world wide hub for poached animals, is having one of its most endangered species on the rise..

Give me a break, please..

I would not trust the Thai figures.  Only if an international organisation came in and conducting the population study would I believe it.

Great news for the BBQ trophy hunters .
