Four people seriously hurt in knife attacks in Vienna

VIENNA (Reuters) - Four people were seriously wounded in two knife attacks in a district of the Austrian capital,Vienna, on Wednesday evening, but a motive or any connection between the assaults was unclear, a police spokesman said.

The stabbings - the first of which took place at 7:45 p.m. (1845 GMT), occurred in Vienna's Second District, which includes the famous Prater park as well as the Praterstern transport hub. It also houses much of Vienna's small Jewish community.

"A man attacked a family - a father, a mother and their 17-year-old daughter - with a knife. The three people were seriously injured and their lives are in danger," the spokesman said, adding later that they were Austrian citizens.

"And half an hour later, there was another attack ... at Praterstern and here a person was also seriously injured and their life is in danger. We do not know to what extent there is a connection here and any motive remains unclear," he said.

Asked what was known about an assailant, he added: "Absolutely nothing. We know we are looking for a man."

A male citizen of Afghanistan was later arrested in connection with the second assault, but no further details were immediately available and any connection between the stabbings remained unclear, the spokesman said shortly afterward.

Vienna has not experienced deadly attacks by Islamist militants like the ones that have struck Paris, Berlin and Brussels since 2015.

Well it is going to be very difficult catching this rampaging attacker if that is the best description the authorities have. Was he tall? short? long blond hair? dreadlocks? clean shaven? Was he perhaps shouting something while trying to kill the family? There is an appalling lack of detail here.

Either it's the Afghani they arrested or another one.

Was he perhaps shouting something? :)  Austrian news media will not report it unless they are forced to.

Guess you know nothing of Austrian political environment and media. Plenty for your fact checking...

Last time I was in Vienna (10 years ago now) I paid $400 per night for a hotel room for what I would categorize as 3.5 - 4 star accomodation. The nice Sierra Leonian (Leonese?) fellow at the desk was most concilliatory but not exactly the seven language concierge I had come to expect In Europe at those prices.

The religion of peace strikes again.

Just wait for the next elections, for the people to have their opportunity to respond.

You not UP TO DATE lol

The People Party's Sebastian Kurz will be the new chancellor. The Freedom Party's Heinz-Christian Strache will be his deputy. Kurz, 31, will be Europe's youngest leader.

Two Austrian political parties formed a government coalition with a far-right presence.

The conservative Austria's People's Party and the far-right Freedom Party forged the alliance, Austrian public broadcaster ORF reported on Friday.
The People Party's Sebastian Kurz will be the new chancellor. The Freedom Party's Heinz-Christian Stache will be his deputy. Kurz, 31, will be Europe's youngest leader.
This development comes after elections in October.
It would make Austria the only country in Western Europe to have a far-right party in government. It is the first time the far right is in an Austrian government coalition in more than 10 years.
Austria was governed by a coalition led by Chancellor Christian Kern's Social Democrats and Kurz's People's Party, but that partnership collapsed in May, prompting a snap vote.
The People's Party won the election but needed to form a coalition because it didn't win a majority of the votes.
The Freedom Party has a long history in Austria's Parliament and was part of a coalition government between 2000 and 2005.
There has been a rise across Europe of populist far-right parties, many of which have campaigned on anti-immigration platforms.
Immigration has dominated the campaign. Kurz has taken a hard line, calling for limits on the number of refugees entering Europe and benefits cuts for EU migrants living in Austria.
In 2016, Kurz spearheaded a border crackdown across the Balkans designed to stem the flow of migrants, and this year he proposed plans to seal off the Mediterranean route to Europe.

Was the Southwest of Austria, Bavaria and The far North of Italy ever not conservative? Or as it's called now, "far right wing".

Carinthia - Kaernten - South Austria was - Right wing as they had a Right wing shooting star -Joerg Haider- there,

who died in a traffic accident some years ago.

I not up to date for now.

No idea from Italy

South West Austria and Bavaria is Conservative - would not say -Right - or far right-  :shock1:

Northern Italy is conservative, as are Southwest Austria and Bavaria, as you mention. In the popular media nomenclature that translates as "far right wing".

To clarify, which parties were previously viewed as conservative now are defined by media as far right, without any changes to their manifesto?

Sounds like the man for the moment.

I find it hard to believe that there is no CCTV coverage in a modern developed country which shows the assailant?
