Pattaya motorcycle taxi drivers get driving lessons

PATTAYA:--More than 1,000 Pattaya motorcycle taxi drivers were given driving lessons and tested for drugs as city hall tries to clean up the streets.

Pattaya security boss Teerasak Jatuporn and municipal police chief Pol. Maj. Jirawat Sukontasap conducted the lessons and test Feb. 23 at Pattaya School No. 8. Staffers from the Chonburi Land Transportation Department lectured on traffic law that are often ignored in Pattaya, especially by public-transport drivers.

Issues include running red lights, illegal U-turns, driving on sidewalks, against traffic, and parking in prohibited areas.

The drivers also were subjected to urine tests, with those who failed being detained and their licenses suspended while they attend a drug-rehabilitation course.

Then they all walk out the door mumbling, "A lai wa?"

if this has enlightened   1 in 10 thats an improvement  this is unfortunately just an exercise  to balance the  budget for yearly grant     applications seeing that  inquiries into misspending/diversions   seems to be flavor of the month in many gov departments

so they were taught how to go against traffic.ride on footpath..speed  through stopped traffic ..and the list went on and on and on

From my recent visit to Pattaya, these m/c riders are doing a good job, considering all the abuse they get from drunken tourists.

They should also be given lessons in charging the correct official fare

seems to be timely

I like the idea,,,,, but who is giving the lessons ????

I'd much prefer a crackdown on Bus drivers. They seem to think a red light means "slow" not "stop".

There shouldn't be any need for lessons if the police would enforce the law. But we all (besides Thai people) know that this is not gonna happen.

cant see any motorbike taxi riders in that photo ?

hopefully instruct them about the long motorized thingy that used the metal beams that obstruct the roads.

Taking more of the fun out of Fun City. Another nail in the coffin . . . .

Will they teach them to use helmets?

Drunken tourists? All the abuse? Recent visit? Good job? It would be helpful to read comments from someone who lives here full-time, drives the streets and observes the driving habits of these characters on a frequent basis. Snapshots are nice, but lack longterm credibility.

I travel into Pattaya twice a week.  I am always appalled at the standard of driving not just by motorbike taxi drivers but as they are licenced to carry passengers should be carefully scrutinised.  Many have no lights particularly at the back & with stretches of Suk not illuminated are a real hazard.  A police force who are not scared to work after dark would help.
