Quick police work leads to arrest of suspects in Uthai Thani gold shop robbery - one is a Qatari man.

Police in Pattaya announced the arrest of a Qatari national and his female Thai accomplice for the vicious robbery at an Uthai Thani gold shop on Monday evening.

The couple were found hiding in rooms connected to a Baptist Church in Jomtien.

Despite being caught in possession of the getaway car and all the gold amounting to well over 3 million baht, they are continuing to deny involvement.

Shop owner and mayor's brother Janyong Nopparat, 48, was swiped over the head with a metal lever and had his head smashed into a display case. His wife was also hurt in the Monday evening raid that netted 188 baht's worth or necklaces and other gold items.

CCTV caught a tall man and a female accomplice dressed in balaclavas. They escaped the scene in a Toyota Vios despite being shot at by a deputy mayor.

Region 6 cops managed to trace the movements of the car from CCTV footage and found out that it was a rental vehicle from a company called Nuch Ruang Sri Group in Pattaya. The company rents vehicles to tourists.

The car was soon found on Beach Road in Jomtien and the suspects were found hiding in accommodation attached to the Baptist Church between sois 12 and 13. They were in possession of a large quantity of gold.

Arrested were Mohammed Ibrahim M.A. Al Malki from Qatar and Aisa Udomwatananon. Police used special powers of arrest under threats to national security to make the arrests.

The suspects denied everything and have been taken back to Nong Chang district police station in Uthai Thani for questioning.

A Muslim hiding out in a Baptist church. Who'd have thought it? The police did. Good on them.

They are probably wondering how they got caught, idiots.

What's that all about?

Did he arrive Thailand without his brain ? It sure looks like it.

is he really a Qatari national? I thought they were all rich.. with the only poor there being the migrant workers? Seems a bit odd for a Qatari to commit such a crime

Well done to the police for a speedy arrest.

Violent robbers like this will continue until caught and might easily kill someone.

The local mayor is probably thrilled at how quickly the criminals who robbed and assaulted his younger brother have been caught and the gold recovered. :whistling:

What a moron have a nice time in monkey house and same to his stupid Thai lady

It will be interesting what sentence they receive

Paul

Well good work here... where is Boss, now?

The mayor's brother; 3 million in gold; CCTV cameras that work; a trail Stevie Wonder could have followed; of course Pattaya police moved quickly.  Now if it was a common assault of eight Thais beating up a an expat pensioner, they'd barely show a flicker of interest.

you know that's not true. i hardly ever go to pattaya so don't know it too well but i'm fairly certain the police wouldn't put up with pensioners being bashed up by gangs of locals for no reason. this guy didn't think through his robbery that's why he was easily caught

"prison with suite"

"Inspectors found prisoners sleeping three to a 10m² cell, a plague of rats and bedbugs"

"including gym"

"older institutions as well as most remand prisons remain under-equipped as sports equipment is insufficient and faulty."

"bedroom with bathroom"

"while toilets lack privacy and hygiene is "deplorable", conditions that do not measure up to the requirements of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture"

"kitchen equipped with hallal products"

"While the prisons will usually provide vegetarian or pork-free meals, it does not provide halal nor kosher meals."

"and of course, smart phone."

"a €15 million plan to improve and update the prison network’s mobile phone signal-blocking technology"
