Travelling with a child

Featured Replies

I've never travelled with a child before, but I'm thinking of flying back to Europe later this year with my son, who is half a year old. Obviously he'll be sitting on my lap but I'm wondering do I need an  ticket for him or do I need to inform the airline in advance?

He already has his Irish and Thai passports, but I'm wondering how easy is it to take him out of Thailand and into Europe if I'm not travelling with his mother?

Thanks in advance.

Yes... You will still need to book your child a ticket (even for a  'Lap Seat'), you will also have to pay some tax...

Regarding travelling out of Thailand,  there are a handful of threads on this subject.

To ensure no issues: You can obtain a document from your local Amphur office for you to travel alone with your child - The child's mother will need to be present at the Amphur office for this affirmation.

Many people have also 'chanced' it without issue - but doing so does not give you any guarantees of being permitted travel.

I have travelled freely with my son (without my Wife) twice this past year (when he was 3) - I had a Signed letter and passport copy from my Wife just in case of issue. My Wife also remained near the Airport, again just in case she needed to come back to the airport to speak with Immigration. I  encountered no issues or questions.

In short, if you live near your Amphur, it would be best to ensure you have the required documentation, especially  as this would be your child's first time out of the Kingdom.

Thank you Richard! Makes sense. I'm new at this.

It's a must that you still need to book him and get his ticket so the airline will be aware that you're traveling with your son.

I hope your flight will be a breeze since every time I travel with my baby to States it's always a disaster. Sometimes he cries straight for an hour and I can already see that some of the passengers were already annoyed at us:passifier:

Thanks! Generally speaking, our boy is as good as gold. He only cries if we are too slow getting his bottle/food when he's hungry.

We did it when our son was just under 1 and again when he was 2.5 - 13 hours to London and back.  On the plane he was generally fine.  You can book a bassinet if you think he'll sleep in it.  The younger the better.  When he was 2.5 it was far more difficult, especially dealing with long waits and queues at airports!

Bulkhead seat with the bassinet is the way to go.
