Songkran crackdown to battle road accidents, harsher penalties promised

Get the lazy corrupt police off their lazy corrupt asses and out on the road policing like they’re paid to do.  There is absolutely no road policing in Thailand so people do whatever they want out on the roads, and they do with the resultant Fatal accidents.  All heavy vehicles need at least 6 monthly inspections and all heavy vehicle drivers need training appropriate for the vehicle they are driving.  Training on selecting a appropriate gear to descend steep hills would be a good place to start.  Breath testing before starting a driving shift should be mandatory, and strict inforcement of driving hours. That’s just a start.

Why do these measures come up only for Songkran? Yes, Thai roads are worse during the holidays, but they suck year-round; why not work to reduce the carnage year-round?   Why not test for al

After I learned who chairs this club of 'experts' I'm sure after the body count we will read the measures were a huge success. Unfortunately due to fate some 500 to 600 people can not join the celebrations.

After inspection, Damrongsak said police suspected the driver did not use a low gear during the six-kilometre-long downhill road section but kept tapping on the air brake pedal for control until the system was out of air.

Bullshit;

If there is no air in the bottles, the brakes are blocked; impossible to go . It was my job during 13 years all over Europe, including behind the Iron Curtain ( 1971-1983 )

Maybe the tingtong driver did like that, pumping, pumping...but the problem was about the brakes drums; they were so hot so the brake lining cannot touch the cylinder in which they are because of dilating .

When downhill you MUST go the same speed you had when climbing .But none thai people know about that; they don't learn in school how to drive safely.

Do that experience, follow a minibus driver downhill Doi Inthanon for example..It stinks a lot because he never use the correct gear and has always his foot on the brake pedal.

I've missed something or just false info in different sources. Saw statistics at last Songkran, and death toll was not more than average annually. So, what's this talk of "carnage" is all about, every year same sh*t?

Western thinking there.

The 'other' thinking is if you put the vehicle in a lower gear then you can't go so fast.

Again with the seven dangerous Songkran days!  Instead of paying thousands of police overtime to stare at their phones all day; why don't they send hundreds out on motor bikes arresting violators? Why don't Thai police work at night when the daily carnage is at its peak?

Why bring logic & common sense into this ?

Correct!

of this government, or any future government for that matter, is really serious in reducing deaths from road traffic accidents they should start by actually enforcing traffic rules and regulations 365 days a year - not only during songkran, calendar new year, or any particular season. consistently give tickets for crossing red lights, making 90-degree turns on u-turn slots, undertaking, crossing yellow lines, driving against traffic, illegal parking, overloading, wearing seatbelt/helmet, jaywalking, illegal entry, driving with broken lights, etc. and you'll see a dramatic improvement in the driving behavior and number of accidents on thai roads. the signs, lights, and lines are there on streets all over thailand. it's just that nobody seems to bother following them because nobody also bothers catching them. strict enforcement during songrkran is just a band aid solution.

Prawit confirmed that starting 2015 licences for giant buses were not being renewed.

What year are we in now?

Same procedure like every celebration but no positive results...Drive safely on New Year, Songkran, Loi Krathong, do what do you want the rest of the year. Force the police to do what they have to do and you will see some good results.

2014???

And as usual, bib will be sleeping at their roadstop for a day or two before they too head off to drink laokhau. No hope until you replace the entire police force with foreigners.

Pay the police a proper salary, give them a percentage of every legitimate offence and ticket/fine they give , and hey presto. Corruption gone and the police have an incentive to actually do some work.

Are you suggesting that Thais are some kind of sub human species , that are incapable of doing things that other humans can do, so, they need replacing with non Thais ?

Lets see some REAL policing to avoid accidents in the first place.

The Transport ministry also needs to help not just all take a 4 day holiday & pick up the pieces after

Proclaim that this is the year everything will be okay, rinse and repeat yearly...

I'm suggesting their culture is substandard when it comes to law enforcement and the only way it'll ever work is for some one not brainwashed by maibpenrai, face and corruption to take the job. Can be Thais grown up outside the country or even luekkruengs that have grown outside.

We've seen what happens when the locals try anything. Fail.

I wonder how much insurance companies are paying out on a yearly basis with these kinds of issues?

Surely insurance companies should be more involved with the process of the drivers responsible for safe passage and the approval of maintenance of the transport. Gotta be costing them so fair bit.

I heard this not by years, its by decades! Nothing is going to change in this country.

Songkran crackdown

Meaningless words on a yearly basis.

Great idea, well impressed.  I wonder why they didn't do this on previous years, think of all the lives that could have been saved.  Never mind, at least this year will be safe on the roads.

Makes me want to go out and have a crash with them offering "so much", urge :sick:away, 36k each "wow"

Maybe he omitted a zero and meant to say 6.5 million in compensation. It would still be a joke, only not as funny.

Another brain dead official spouting nonsense, every year we here about crackdowns at songkran.

Yet every year there is carnage on the roads.

Mandatory  drink/ drug test for every driver involved in any accident is needed.

Mandatory  drink/ drug test for every driver involved in any accident is needed.......with mandatory imprisonment for everyone who fails  INCLUDING HI-SO's and those drivng expensive cars! Nobody is or should be allowed to be above the law!

Police will proceed with legal action against Kan Eng Tour Co for failing to submit the coach for inspection for over a year – the law requires it be inspected twice a year – and for allowing a drug abuser to drive the vehicle.

A proper punishment would be to have the OWNER put in jail for a year as a warning that the government is serious and to show that accountability starts at the top with the overpaid asshats at the top.  Instead, we will see money change hands and nothing more said.

He didn't have a snowballs chance in hell. Surrounded by thoroughly corrupted Thais. Now, change the entire government to fellas like him and let's see then.

"alcohol test after every road accident"

Er um... so wait until after the crash/deaths to check for drunk drivers. Great idea Somchai!

Even worse, the suggestion is that until now they haven't been doing drug/alcohol tests on drivers involved in lethal road accidents.

Yes, about time we had a fresh new approach instead of the stricter measures of previous years

....Free Chicken Essence for all drivers over the Songkran days...all you can drink...that will fix it...:cheesy::cheesy:

Alcohol checks before accidents are done in civilized countries.
