Hi,

I am legally married to a Thai. We have a child, 10. I got my Non-Imm O visa in Savannahkhet about 2 years ago. I have extended it locally every year, by providing evidence of 400k in the bank and all the other documents. No problems. I work in a local school and have a work permit to do so. This year I cannot get the 400k here, so was thinking of switching to a Non-Imm B. Every post I read here always mentions the need for 400k.

However, a friend of mine, who is in similar situation to me (Non-Imm O, married, child and teaching work) tells me that he has never been asked for evidence of 400k in the bank and doesn't have it, but has not had a problem getting his visa extended over the years.

Could someone explain to me how this is possible please?

The 400k baht option is not the only option. You can also show a monthly income of 40k baht or more to apply for the extension. You would need proof of it by way of income tax payments and last years income tax return.

If you are planning on using the income from your teaching job you don’t need to change to a Non ‘B’ visa. You can continue as you are but use your Thai income instead of400K in the bank.

As you have a Thai child it is possible to get an extension as a parent in which case you only need 400K in the bank on the day you apply. So a short term loan from a friend might be a alternative solution.

The income from my teaching job is only 25k/month. Is this enough?

I think my friend only gets about 28.5k/month (Rajabhat wage).

You need at least 40k baht of income to apply for an extension of stay based upon marriage.

I think your friend is getting his extensions based upon teaching. There is no minimum salary for that type of extension.

You could change to teaching form marriage when your extension is due. You will need paperwork from the school to do the application.

Not new. The police order does not state the money has to be in the bank for any amount of time for an extension based upon being the parent of a Thai. But some offices want it to be in the bank for 2 months.
